Problem Ejecting Mass Storage Device used for Acronis Backups

Thread needs solution

After running an Acronis True Image 2015 backup I now find that when I try to eject the USB drive where I store my backups, Windows 7 tells me that the "device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows .... and try again". The backup drive is a WD My Book and the backups seem to have performed normally and I can see the files on the WD drive.

According to Task Manager no Applications are running, but I notice that the processes TrueImage.exe *32, TrueImageMonitor.exe *32 and TibMounterMonitor.exe *32 are running - despite the TrueImage application itself is not running.

- Are these processes hanging on to my USB drive  ?

- Are the backups safe and correct that I have just created ?

- Is it safe to just shut down the PC and not risk harming the backups ?.

- What is this (new) problem due to ?

Thanks for any advice

Mike, welcome to these User Forums.

Please see KB 44350: Acronis True Image 2015/2014: Processes and Services which describes each of these items and their purpose etc.

There are various scripts stored in the MVP User Tools and Tutorials repository found via the Useful Links section of the fourm, that can be used to stop and start the Acronis background Services.

I have found it a lot more difficult to eject external drives if I have booted the computer with the drive connected during the boot process, and a lot easier if the drive is connected after Windows is at the desktop.

Your backups should be safe if you perform a normal Windows shutdown or restart, as any cached data should be flushed to the drive automatically by those processes.

Thanks for that, Steve. I'll just shut the PC and stop worrying !

(BTW, I did power up the USB drive after Windows had booted)

Regards,

Mike
