Problems after recovery from 2013 backup

Thread needs solution

I made a full backup of my C drive (Win 7) a couple years ago, and I'm having troubles restoring it.

I'm using Acronis 2013 boot disk and restoring from the backup I made.  The first issue I run into is the computer won't boot because of a missing boot file.  I resolved this by booting from a Windows 7 recovery disk which replaced the missing start up files needed, and now the system boots.

After booting, I noticed the internet connection was REALLY SLOW, like I'm connected through an old 1200 baud modem.  Takes 3 minutes just to load the Google home page, no joke. Then I noticed Windows update wouldn't work, says the windows update service isn't running.

After fishing around on the microsoft website for solution, I think I've got Windows update halfway working now by opening a command prompt and using some stop and start services commands.

But I still can't get a connection to the internet to work through a webbrowser.  Tried with machine connected directly to LAN, and also connected to WiFi. Neither method gives me a good internet connection.  Tried resetting winsock, and that seems to have killed the LAN connection totally.

So what did I do wrong?  Everything was functional when I created the origional backup. Why don't things work when I restore from it?  Any help appreciated.

I'm now trying the following commands to reset both winsock and ipv4 and v6.

  1. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
  2. Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
  3. Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Don't know if this will work or not...

And in case anyone else runs into this issue, here is a link to a site that explains how to fix problems with Windows update service not running.

My worry now is how many other services are corrupted or not running because of the Acronis recovery process, and how to prevent this from happening again the next time I have to do a recovery.

No joy after reseting the TCP IP stack and rebooting. Even downloaded the Microsoft tool at:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/299357

That didn't fix it either.  I'm stumped. What did I do wrong in the recovery process that would cause all these issues?
