Problems recovering from backups for ATI 2015

Thread needs solution

I tried to recover a full backup of a laptop using “Entire PC (JANETX1)_full_b1_s1_v1.tib". It was in the list of backups on the first ATI screen. So, I clicked Recover, Recover now. It warrned me that it would delete my existing files. It asked to restart, and then after exiting windows, it said that Data Recovery was occurring from the file. It then gave me an error message:

“Failed to open Backup D:\Acronis Backups\“Entire PC (JANETX1)_full_b1_s1_v1.tib. Make sure that the location is accessible and contains all version of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted”.

And then the PC freezes, and the only way to get out is by pressing the power button

I have checked the disk for errors and defects, and it passes them all. I'm using Acronis True Image 2015. I am using Windows 10, and it is uptodate. On the chance that I might have moved the file, I tried recovering from both the root as well as a backup folder that was on the drive. No success in either case.

Would welcome any suggestions as to what I should try.

Dinyar, welcome to these public User Forums.

The first recommendation here is to not attempt to recover a backup that includes the Windows 10 OS from within Windows - doing so will always require a restart and will boot the laptop into a temporary Linux based rescue environment.

The recommended method to use is to first create the stand-alone Acronis bootable rescue media and then test that you are able to boot the laptop from that media using the same BIOS boot mode as is used by Windows 10.

If you can boot from the rescue media, then further check that you can see the internal drive in the laptop that will be the destination for the recovery, plus can see the storage drive containing the backup image file.

If all looks good, then do the Recovery using this method.

See the ATI 2015 User manual: Recovering your system to the same disk

Note: if when booted from the rescue media you cannot 'see' the internal disk drive, then you may need to use either a later version of True Image or create Windows PE type rescue media where additional device drivers can be injected for devices not supported by the Linux based media.
