A question about backups

Thread needs solution

I had a question about backups. I have Windows Vista service pack 2, and Acronis Home 2013. I've never backed up my data before with Acronis, so this may seem like a silly question: Will Acronis back up with all my folders and subfolders with just a standard back-up, no image(as I will next holiday season be getting a computer with Windows 10) Is there a way to do this. As I said, I'm a total newbie at this backing up thing. I tried backing up with Windows Backup that came with Vista, but it didn't put my data in my folders, just the files all over the place. Is there a way I can do this with Acronis without doing an image?  Help!!!

Thank you for your patience.

Hi Katherine,

You can do a full disk image backup,  different partition backups, or file/folder backups.  All of these will be saved in Acronis proprietary .TIB format so will require the Acronis application or the Acronis offline bootable media to recover from.

Acronis 2013 will not work as an installed application with Windows 10. However, you can continue to use the 2013 offline bootable recovery media to take offline backups of your drive and/or files/folders if you have no intention of upgrading to a newer version of Acronis that is comatible within Windows 10.

If you're looking for just a copy of your existing data, you may want to check out somethign like AllwaySync (free version available for home use) which is not a backup/recovery solution but is instead, a folder/file duplication application (so that you have a repository of the same data in two places).  Changes in one, update to the other automatically so it is still not a backup replacement, but may be useful for what you're looking to do.

Thanks. I *was* planning to get an upgrade of Acronis before I get the new computer with Windows 10, so I"ll be ready. Will the 2013 and the 2016 or 2017 have the same format, that is, .tib?  I assume it is, but I'm not sure.  Again, thanks a lot. The saving folders sounds liek what I want. :)

Hi Katherine.  Yes, Acronis backups continue to use the .tib format and I expect they will keep doing so in 2017 and moving forward.  I don't forsee that changing as it's their proprietary backup format and backwards compatibilit  (to the extent possible in different versions) is important to retain.

That said, it's a good idea to make/keep your offline bootable recovery media for each version of Acronis you have existing backups of (you can also get it from your online account if registered online already), just in case.  In most cases, you want to use the same bootable recovery media to restore with, as the image was created from.  However, it's not always necesary, but best to have it around if newer versions are not allowing a recovery to proceed with the newer bootable recovery media.  I have not had that problem, but others have reported this to be an issue at times.

Regards!
