Question About Correct Backup Method I Should Be Using

Thread needs solution

I made a full backup after installing Windows and running Windows Update. I made an incremental backup after installing my major applications. I made a final incremental backup after finalizing the installation of Windows, running a disk cleanup, and defragmenting. I thought I had three pristine images of each stage of the installation process should I ever want to revert to one of them. I also make an incremental backup before installing: service packs, new programs, programs that expire, and major software (anti-virus, software firewalls, Office, the applications that come with my hardware, and browsers).

Will these incremental backups work? I mean, can I pick any one of the three to revert to or do they have to go in order?

Do I want to be using differential backups instead?

Also, where do I view my serial number so I can register my software? And where do I find the "Check for updates" button?

John,
A very long chain of incrementals is more fragile than a very long chain of differentials, but differentials take more space.
As you install more updates, you should consider setting up new task and start a new chain.

But yes, you can choose any incremental and you will return to the state at the time you made the backup.

You have received your serial number when you purchased your software. You see it in the help menu, about Acronis True Image Home. In the same menu, you can see check for updates (this is true for ATI 2011).

Pat L,

Where do I find the serial number and "Check for updates" button in ATI 2010 Home?

John

You can find the latest build from your Acronis account.

Certain 2010 builds do not show your serial number (in the about ATI menu item). If you cannot find it, you will have to contact Acronis.

John,
On some versions, the top help menu is not visible and you must depress and hold the alt key for the menu to be visible. While holding the Alt key, most of the information you need should be visible.

If you bought the retail package from a store, the serial is part of the contents.

If you bought on line with an online download, then the serial is supplied on an email where links to downloads are included.

If you examine the install file, you will also find the build number as part of the file name.

Once you have registered your serial with Acronis, the download page becomes accessible where you can download the most current builds for your version.
