Quick query on sector-by-sector

Thread needs solution

I can not for the life of me get a sector-by-sector image back-up to work with my small 80gb HD that I use for my OS because of a bad sector. CHKDSK does not seem to repair it so that TI can read it, so I get the error during back-up process. Everything is working fine on my PC so I am not that worried about it, although I have a feeling that the HD will die sooner rather than later. All my data is safe so I am not concerned. When I do a normal full image back-up (not sector-by-sector) it works fine, no errors about bad sectors.

My question is: Will this back work in case of total OS failure? When I put a new HD to run the operating system in my PC will the backed up image give me everything back as it is now? Or do I need to get a sector-by-sector image back-up to work?

It could well be that the bad sector is not in an in-use sector, perhaps. When you ran chkdsk did you use the /r option? It checks the entire disk surface.

You only need a regular TI backup to restore your system to a new HD. The sector-by-sector backup is intended for cases where TI can't make sense of the filesystem such as if it is severely corrupted or encrypted or if it is an unsupported file system.

Your primary concern should be, if you haven't done so, that the TI rescue CD will restore your image. Best test is to a spare HD but if you can boot up the rescue CD and create an archive and then validate it with the rescue CD the odds are very much in your favor that it will work.

I agree with Seek totally.

There really is no need to do a sector by sector backup as far as I can see

Would I be correct in saying that in most cases people don't use the sector by sector back up?

Yes Waz.

The reason being that TI will indeed do a sector by sector backup which bypasses the MFT (master file table)  on the disk or partition so the backup will be large. It also means that it will try to copy any 'rubbish' sectors.  Not doing a sector by sector means it will copy or backup all files from sectors that it knows to be good unless there is something seriously wrong with the MFT.

this forum so slow - it takes two or more to know whether something has been posted then it posts it as many times as you click, bugger.

This forum may be slow, but I always get good advice. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!
