I am thinking about going to Raid.

Can I backup my C drive to and external drive.
Install a second drive and setup raid.
Then restore off the external drive to avoid a total reinstall?

Possibly. Some systems will allow it and some won't. The main problem is getting the RAID drivers installed before you have the RAID configured. If the drivers are incorrect, Windows will throw a 0x7b BSOD when booted.

If the system is currently running in AHCI or RAID mode (with single drives), the necessary drivers may already be installed. If you have spare drives available you can try the procedure and see what happens without risking the current setup.
