Re-Partition New Hard Drive

Thread needs solution

My hard drive failed but I had a full back up and after a new hard drive was installed the Acronis Recovery worked perfectly. However, the old hard drive was 120G and the new hard drive is +-260G. As a result the new hard drive seems to have automatically partisioned to 120G (or at least that is what the OS is reading) and the differance is on the other partition of the same hard drive and not being recognized. I would like to have the new hard drive read as one partition of +-260G. Can anyone tell me what I must do to get the new hard drive to read as just one partition with a full +- 260G?

When you go thru the steps to restore an image, you will see a screen that asks the destination of the restore. After you complete that item, you will also see a line where you can change the size of the destination partition. Make it as large as it allows, this will give you the 100% partition you want.

To do this now, you will have to do the restore again.

There is another way to do this without deleting the restore you have already done. This is with partition software. I did this some time ago with freeware called GPARTED-LIVE. I don't recall the detals but it wasn't difficult.

Try it and if it fails you still have a valid backup.

Fungus, Thanks for the reply You said "..you will also see a line where you can change the size of the destination partition." I do not see a line where I can change the size of the destination partition. Maybe this is because I am using v9(Build 3677) which has worked flawlessly for me. What I do see is the progression of screens shown below and I wonder if ,as noted, the C-drive will be partitioned as +- 260 G. Attachments are JPG but they do not open for me.

I HAVE NOW TRIED TO UPLOAD THE ATTACHMENTS 4 TIMES (ONCE AS PNG AND THREE TIMES AS JPG) BUT THEY DO NOT SHOW UP.

Hi Blair,
I went through the same problem as yours lately and I resized my HD, after the backup, with Easus Partition.
It works great and it is very intuitive, believe me.Much easier than any Linux Live Cd,I would say...

Babac,
Thank you also for responding. It looks as though this can be accomplished in TI but I am not 100% positive and for someone smarter than I the screen shot attachments (don't know why they are not working) would probably clarify whether a certain step during restore would do it.

The TI manual talks about a differant method related to unallocated space and sliding to make larger but I cannot seem to get hold of anything to slide where I have been poking around in the Restore Wizard.

Hi Blair,
In order to resize your partition with Easeus, you should first click on the windows of your HD.
Then select ''Resize or/ move partition''in the left pane. Finally you put the pointer of your mouse just on the edge of the rectangle ,as shown on this screenshot. When the pointer changes into a sort of double cross, you move the mouse to the left until you get the desired size.

Alternatively, just type in the desired size into ''partition size''.

Another way to regain the space is called the Secure Zone Trick. Look in the Sticky by GroverH for a link to it and if you're using True Image 2009 or 2010 then instruction #7 has to be amended as stated by another user in message #14 in this link:
This post here in message #14 by another user describes what has changed in the process:

Babac,
Thanks again! How did you get the JPG to work? It seems easy to do but after I Browse/Attach they seem to upload but do not open for me in the post.

Hi Blair,
First of all, did you solve your problem with Easus Partition???
As for the attached pictures ,I really can't see why it does not work for you.Explain how you try to do it and will see...

Babac, I have not solved the partitioning yet. I have been trying to solve another problem related to Outlook-Hotmail sync with Microsoft and within the next few hours I will know if that is solved. I will then do a full backup and get back to the hard drive sizing. I am now going to try a test attachment using a copy I saved of your "easus photof.jpg" which I cannot imagine being any differant than my jpg's although yours is larger. My steps: 1-Click "File Attachments" 2-Brouse to find the "Test easus photo.jpg" on my desktop 3-The file is found and the path shown as "C:\Documents and Settings\RM\Desktop\Test easus photo.jpg" 4-Click "Attach" and "Please wait" shows up as a little window shows diagonal lines moving. When done a box shows the title "Test easus photo.jpg" and a size of 122.92 KB and there is a chek in the box for "List" and "Delete" has no check in the box. 5-No other attachments to be made so to be thorough I click "Preview" then the attachment and I'll be darn-the jpg shows up this time. 6-I click "Save" to go on and see if it will show up on the forum post.

I am surprised-your jpg opened just fine so I am going to go back and upload my jpg's again at the previous post above.

VERY STRANGE! USED THE SAME PROCEDURE AND UPLOADED MY JPG'S AGAIN BUT THEY STILL DO NOT SHOW UP.

Going back to the beginning, the Partition Resize screen in TI9 is right after the Partition Type screen in the Restore Wizard. Go through the wizard slowly and you will see it.

Seekforever,

I tried to upload just one screen shot to see if that is the screen you are referring to but it did not work so I will try to explain the screen progressions as they relate to screen shots (1-5 above) that will not upload.  I hope this is clear but the screen shots would be so much better.

1-RESTORED HARD DISK DRIVE LOCATION. I select the hard disk drive I want to restore to.

2-NON-EMPTY DESTINATION HARD DISK DRIVE. At this location I have a Yes or No choice. I would choose YES which says: "Yes, I want to delete all the partitions on the destination hard disk drive before restoring." I assume this will delete the unallocated space shown in the previous screen as 121.1 GB and make the new drive one partition of +-260 G.

3-NEXT SELECTION At this screen I assume O would select "NO" because I do not want to restore another partition.

4-CHOOSE RESTORE OPTIONS I always use the defaults

5-This is a copy paste of the next screen where Acronis is showing what it is about to do.

Disk Partition Recovery from Archive From file:"G: \01-Acronis BU\Oct 6 Full.tib"

Operation 1 of 2 (Reboot required) not sure why it is saying "Reboot required" I have never seen this before

Restoring partition Hard disk:1 Drive letter:C: File system:NTFS Volume label:Local Disk Size:111.8 GB

Operation 2 of 2 Restoring partition structure Hard disk:1

Blair,
Look at item 7B inside my signature link. This will help you to understand. After you read it, then come back with more questions.

In your posting of attachments, do not use preview during your initial post.
Upload your attachments and then click save the posting. If editing is needed, it can be edited after your initial post is shown.

You may be choosing the wrong disk. Isn't your 260 empty or blank. If you are sure you are choosing the 260 disk, then the yes answer will delete whatever is one the 260 and give you a later chance to resize.

The reboot statement tells me you are not booted from the Rescue CD which you should be doing. Do not do the restore from within Windows.

Item 3 you should be saying yes and restore you track0/mbr.

I have been distracted for a while and to date still have not resized my hard drive but I am ready and I would like to thank everyone that offered suggestions.

I have just finished reading through the excellant Guide suggested by GroverH (pg 31 seems to way to go with a new restore) and down loaded "Easeus Partition Master Home Edition" 4.0.1 (http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_...) suggested by Babac. Does anyone know of any possible disadvantage to using the "Easeus Partition Master Home Edition" ? Using that program seems to be the quickest and easiest way to go and I cannot understand why it would not be the international standard unless I am missing something. I have already installed a new a +-250G hard drive that when restored by Acronis, worked perfectly, but gave me the following 2 partitions:
1-C: Local Disk )Primary) 111G
2- Unallocated (Logical) 121G

It seems with "Easeus Partition Master Home Edition" all I need to do is start the progam (without removing the partitions I have) make a couple of selections, as Babac's screen shot has shown me, slide a bar over and I am done. Is that program to good and to easy to be true? Will do something tomorrow after a full backup.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be helpful

I finally expanded my new hard drive using the program mentioned by BABAC "Easeus Partition Master Home Edition" and it was very simple to use, quick and seems to have work perfectly for my situation. Once again I thank everyone for their help.
