"Recover Operation Failed" When Restoring OS Image from Recovery Environment

Thread needs solution

Hi - I wondered if I could beg some help

When I try and restore a newly created OS partition backup, created with ATI 2011 (latest build), to a new drive, I get the error:

"Recover Operation Failed"

... with no further explanation or details.

I am restoring to unallocated space on a different drive within the same system as the drive from which the image originates. The original drive is unplugged to avoid issues . The space I am restoring to is identical in size to the original volume. I ticked the 'MBR' and 'disk signature' options during the restore (from the ATI recovery environment).

The OS in question is Windows 7 Ultimate.

Please can anyone advise on what the problem might be, or what I should do next? I have a support case entered, but would be hugely grateful for any help.

Many thanks

Jules

Log file for this issue is below (sorry about the formatting). Looks like there's some corruption to the FT (?).

As I am restoring an OS partition to a different physical drive (which already contains 2 other partitions) is it possible that I should not be copying the MBR and Disk Signature? IF so, what are the implications of the corrupt MFT and how can this be repaired?

Can anybody suggest how this should best be addressed?

Many thanks

Jules

I've also just noticed that the entire destination disk is now 'offline' apparently because of a Disk Signature collision. I presume this means that the recovery operation has copied the disk signature despite failing - not terribly helpful.

I presume it also means that the disk signature should not be copied if both disks will remain in the system. Would be really grateful for any help here.

Jules

Sorry to bump this, but I'm kind of desperate for help, and have had no response to my support case so far.

Many thanks

Jules

Is there any particular reason Acronis are not responding to this issue?

I have had one pretty unhelpful reply to my support case, suggesting I run chkdsk. This has been done, drive reformatted, still get the same 'Recover Operation Failed' error, which the log shows to be related to corrupt MFT bitmap.

Please can I have some proper support for an application I have purchased.

Jules

I have exactly the same problem now, and am using TI Home 2011 with Build 6696. Please help!!!

Hello JY Lee!

Thank you for your post, I will be glad to help you.

Most likely this error is caused by the errors in the file system, which can be solved by the following steps:

1. Start -> Run -> cmd
2. Issue there the following command:
chkdsk /f /r
/f parameter is responsible for fixing the errors in the file system, so please don't forget it
3. Press enter and reboot the machine.
Upon booting Windows will check the drives for consistency and fix errors if any.

Should the issue remain, please gather Acronis Info and Acronis Report from the problem machine, submit a case with the information attached, and let us know its number.

Let us know if you have any additional questions, we will be glad to help you!

Thank you

Thanks for your reply, Yana. The problem is that I cannot even use Windows 7, and cannot use the cmd command. I have created a bootable USB with TI build 6857, and have tried recover the backup image many times, but have not been successful. I have validated the two backup images, and they were O.K. Please let me know how I can use the checkdisk command when I reboot my Windows. Thanks!

I used chkdsk by rebooting the system with Windows 7 DVD, and it gives me back "No file system error". I have filed a case number (01192902), and am waiting on the reply. When I checked both of "sector by sector" and "unallocated and MBR" options, it returns another error message, "There may be not enough free space on the system partition...". I have a 38 Gb backup file and am trying to restore on a partition with 100 Gb. I start to think that somehow the backup image does not exactly match with the existing partition. I remember increasing the primary partition with Disk Director. Since then I have not have any problem in generating backup files, but now have a recover problem. Before I adjusted the partition size, I was able to recover backup image files. Maybe this is associated with the partition adjustment generated by Disk Director?

I am almost sure that this problem comes from Build 6696. I have multiple backup files and have validated all of them. All of them have passed, but only the backups created with Build 6696 were not recoverable. I have an old backup created with Build 6597 was recoverable, and my system (Windows 7 64 bit) went back to my old status in March. Now the problem is how I can recover my latest backup created with Build 6696, and none of the three backups created with Build 6696 are recoverable. I am still waiting on a reply from tech support.

I have build 6857 and I"m having the same problem. I'm booting Acronis from a flash card and trying to restore an Image to a new hard drive. First, is it possible to just boot a Windows 7 hard drive and restore an Image backup to a SATA slave drive? All my drives are SATA. I don't have any problems with any hard drives but ideally here's what I'm trying to do:

1. Main drive is a 1 TB drive and only 60 Gigs are in use running Windows 7 Home Premium. There's 3 partitions. There's a 100 MB system reserved. There's a 18GB factory restore partition. There's the main C Drive partition which is almost 800 GB.

2. Slave drive is a new 3 TB blank drive.

3. I want to CLONE the main drive to the slave but I want the large partition to be scaled down to 250 GB instead for just OS files and programs. Then I would like to boot from that drive and after that create a new GUID partition of around 2.75 TB (of the total 3 TB drive) for data.

Ideally I'd like to just take the image backup and clone all three partitions to the 3 TB drive and then boot on the new drive and add the new 2.75 TB.

I've tried everything - Ideally I would like to just clone the image backup I made rather than the drive itself. When I tried to boot up with a flash card with Acronis I keep getting the Recovery Operation Failed. I was successfully able to create an image backup but I can't seem to restore it to the new 3 TB drive.

All suggestions will be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I suspect there is some difficulty because of the size of your new disk (3TB).

Try to clean and then manually partition your 3TB drive with exactly the same type of partitions in the same order: 100MB system reserved, 18GB restore and the resized C partition. Make sure that the offset of each partition and size is the same as the original disk. If you use DISKPART from the Windows installation DVD your can be precise.
Then backup your current disk from the recovery CD. Then remove your old drive, place the partitioned 3TB disk at the same spot, boot on the recovery CD and restore each partition one after the other, finishing with restoring the MBR+track0 and disk signature. Make sure you mark the system reserved partition active when you restore it.

Nope - I tried it on a 1TB and 2TB drive. Acronis simply cannot seen to backup my Windows 7 OS. I tried another free backup solution and it seems to have worked just fine the very first time. What I'd really like to know is why Acronis is failing to restore my Windows 7 Home OS onto another hard drive. I have a 64bit processor and I'm not sure if Acronis has trouble with these.

Mike

You mentioned it's a GPT disk ("a new GUID partition...") - TI 2011 without Plus Pack will not recover it to GPT disks and even with it, it will not make a system recovered to GPT disk bootable and will not convert you Windows to boot in UEFI mode, that is needed to boot from GPT disk. (And the system itself must support it of course)

No - the disk I'm trying to clone is not a GPT. I've tried to clone it to another 1 TB drive as well as a 2 TB drive after it failed on the 3TB drive. Acronis simply will not clone it. It's a Windows 7 Home Premium Gateway computer AMD Phenom II X4 945 3 GHZ processor 64 bit OS.

Mike

Michael,

To clarify, are you trying to clone or are you trying to restore a disk and partition image? Some users use the word clone for disk and partition backup.
If you create an all partition disk and partitioin backup of your current disk to another disk, does this work? Can you create the backup?

Then, when you restore to a less than 3TB disk, it fails? Did you try to first "add new drive" pointing at the destination? That will reset the disk.

I'm trying to restore the partition images (C drive and the 100MB reserved and the PQ 18 GB factory image) . I have a disk partition backup of the System C drive as well as the 100 MB reserved area and the 18 GB factory partition. There are three partitions. I can create the backup just fine. The problem is when I go to restore the disk partitions. I've tried to restore it to a 1 TB drive as well as a 2 TB drive. It always gives the same error message. I have tried to restore it several ways and Acronis continues to give the same error "RECOVERY OPERATION FAILED" I've gone into DISK PART and done a CLEAN operation of the disk from Disk Part so I can easily go back into Disk Management and see that everything is unallocated again. I've tried to boot from a memory card when that drive is the only one in the system and I've tried to restore the partitions when the drive is a secondary drive in the system.

Acronis starts the process as if it is going to restore the partition images and displays what it needs to do and what drive number it's going to restore the partition images to (the system C, the 100 MB system reserved, etc). About 30 seconds to a minute after it begins it displays Recovery Operation Failed.

I've upgraded to the latest build 6868 thinking that would fix it but it doesn't. Also, the error happens either way, whether I try to restore the partition when I run Acronis from Windows 7 or when I try and boot and run Acronis from a memory card.

Oh - one more thing and this is really strange. A few times (I don't know why or recall the steps as to what caused this) but Acronis would just stop running. I had to reinstall the program because when I would double click the icon to launch the program it would fail to run. I think that was some how triggered by the 3 TB drive that I was trying to restore to. But, after reinstalling I put the 3 TB drive aside and tried to restore to a 2 TB drive and a 1 TB drive and it would not work. I know the drives are good because when I tried a free backup software product it worked the first time. I'm glad I finally have a backup of the Windows 7 OS so that if the hard drive ever fails I can just swap the other 1 TB drive in the system. However, I like the idea of having an image and being able to restore the image without the drive if I need to. Also, I've used Acronis for years since I've had XP and I never had a problem restoring the OS to another hard drive until Windows 7. But, I don't know if it's a MOBO problem, the fact it's a 64 bit or something else that causes Acronis to keep displaying Recovery Operation Failed.

Mike

Did you turn on the option to backup sector by sector by any chance?

I'll have to check. Please let me know where is the option for that.

The backup did work but it's the restore that is giving me this error. If that is the problem then I still think Acronis should not give an error like that when trying to do the restore. Let me know where that option is to backup sector by sector and I'll check. Thanks for all your help.

Mike

The option is under the backup options, in advanced. Just to be clear, it should *not* be turned on. Some users believe they have to turn it on to get a "real" disk image. It also appears it can create some issues at restore time. That's why I asked.

At this juncture I would have to maintain that it is a bug in the Acronis software unless there is some other suggestion someone can make. There's certainly no reason it should display that error with no other information.

Thanks for any continued help.
Mike

You did and tried the right things. One last thing I would try is to restore the partitions manually. First the system reserved with a 1MB offset. If this goes through, try restoring the c:\partition alone without resizing it. If this works, you will able to change the size later using DISKPART or Windows disk management.

If you cannot even restore any partition, I would try from a recovery CD rather than from the flash drive.

After that I am running out of ideas and you should contact Acronis support.

I appreciate all the time you have taken. However, if it works the first time out with free backup software then I can't see any reason to spend so much time with Acronis. Unfortunately I just don't have that much time to spend with Acronis to figure out why it won't backup the OS when free backup software works the first time through. I've used Acronis for years and it's always worked with XP but I've already spent way too much time trying to backup my Windows 7 OS and it has failed miserably. There's no reason it should display an error like that with nothing else when free software works the first time. But, most important of all, I have a good working backup of my Windows 7 boot disk and that's what I needed.

Thanks,
Mike

I got "Back up & Recovery 10" from tech support, and was able to recover the image. It must be a bug. Now I have another problem. Whenever I reboot the system, I come up with the following error message: Acronis Loader Fatal Error: Boot Drive Partition Not Found - Press to try to boot your OS... I have reported it and am waiting on a reply again. I did not have any problems with ATIH when I used it on Windows XP, but start to have a bunch of problems with Windows 7 including uninstallation and recovery.

RIGHT - I use Acronis 9 for XP backups and they work great but not for my Windows 7 machine and Acronis 11 does not back it up either. But, this free software I got works great.

But, 9 is not compatible with Windows 7 so when I got version 11 it fails miserably. I then played around with the backup that comes with Windows 7 but didn't spend too much time with it and I then found some free backup software online that works great. It worked the first time. Also, I did not have to create an "boot disks" on a flash card. I was able to just mount the secondary SATA drive, restore the image to the secondary drive, remove the main drive and mount the secondary in the main drive's spot and it booted right up. There has to be some major bugs in my Acronis software because it's just not working and not worth the time go contact support and go through all the hoops when free software backed up the drive and accomplished my goals.

One has to admit, it's relatively easy to backup data files. But, if your main drive has a crash and you can't boot your computer then you gotta have a backup drive that has your registry, data and all your programs. Software that is free is working and backs up my Windows 7 but Acronis does not. Also, sometimes Acronis just crashes and then won't run at all and I have to reinstall the program. At this juncture I don't see any reason to use it since I have free software that works. If they come out with some free patches I may try it again in the future.

Mike

Hi, I've had pretty much the exact same issues, though using Acronis 2014.

What's the name of the "free software" that works?
