recovered files are all corrupt !!
Hello All,
Here's my problem.
1) I created a full backup of a PC in March 2016 using Acronis 2015 build 6525.
2) I needed some files from the backup on another laptop so fired up Acronis 2015 build 6525.
3) Select recover files.
4) Select the files I need and put them in a different location to the original.
5) Click next and let it cook.
6) Once complete, I say yippie all the files are there as I can see them in Explorer.
7) try to open a 'rar' file - unable to open
8) try to open a word file - unable to open.
9) try to open excel file - corrupt.
you get the message, basically I cannot open any of the files that I recovered
I mounted the image file and tried with the same result.
This is really frustrating.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Smakwam.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for the welcome and I appreciate the quick response.
As far as I know, the original laptop that was backud up was working fine. I also verified the backup in True Image and got a 'tick'.
The backup drive as far as I know is fine as I've got other files on there that I can open. I've not defragmented it or had any viruses on it.
I dont have the original laptop anymore hence the full backup. I am restoring to another laptop. I'm only restoring certain files not the entire backup.
I will run chkdsk on it like you suggest.
My copy is a genuine and purchased.
I will try your suggestions and if I still have no luck, I will raise a case.
Thanks

Smakwam, if you are restoring to another laptop, are you doing this using the ATIH 2015 Rescue Media, i.e. booting from CD or USB stick to do the restore, or have you installed ATIH 2015 on the laptop?
If ATIH 2015 is installed, try double-clicking on the image file .TIB in Windows Explorer and see if you can navigate around the contents and open some of the other files it contains.
Is it possible that the original backup was created with a different version than 2015?

Hi Steve,
Im restoring some of the files to another computer on which AITH is installed.
I can navigate and see all the files in the image. I also mounted the image to see if that made a difference and that also worked. I thin somehow the file must be corrupt so I'll run chkdsk on the portable drive first.
Thanks again for your response.

From an administrative command prompt, run chkdsk /r on each partition of the internal drive, and on the external HD. If there are hidden partitions, assign letters to them so you can chkdsk.
Also run a drive checking utility from the drive manufacturer, as those sometimes catch errors missed by chkdsk.
Don't connect via a hub, a port in a monitor, or a USB extension cord, etc. Connect the external drive directly to a USB port on the rear of the computer case.

Hello all again and thanks for the responses.
I'm even worse off now than I was before :(
I ran chkdsk /r on the portable drive overnight and there must have been some issues because now the backup file has 0 bytes!!!
is there anything I can do or have i lost that backup for ever ?

Smakwam, I am sorry to hear that the problem has gotten worse since running CHKDSK /R on your portable drive.
Unfortunately, if this has rendered you backup file to now show 0 bytes in size, this would suggest that the drive is starting to fail and that bad sectors were found either in the file structure itself, or else in the Master File Table that records the details for where the file is stored.
The only further advice I can offer to you is to check if you have any other copies of the backup file, perhaps on a different drive, or even on this drive but with a different date?
See the attached document that may help you try to recover bad sectors on the portable drive using the HDAT2 utility - I have used this lots of times and it will give you a better idea of the status of the drive.
