Recovery CD: TI home 2010 Problem accessing drives to search for tib files - unstable and does not work at all with e-SATA

Thread needs solution

I am using TI home 2010 (with the plus pack) using the latest 7046 build and I want to make my back ups on an external 1.5 TB e-SATA drive and also to be able to use these backups for system recovery.

I can make back-ups without any problems (including on my external e-SATA drive). I can boot from the recovery CD (either created from TI home 2010 or downloaded directly from the web site) and I get to the TI home 2010 menu where I can choose recovery or back up. However if I try browsing the drives to look for tib files, the system seizes up. I get a list of the drives displayed, including the e-SATA drive, but if I attempt to select a drive using either the mouse or the keyboard, by clicking the mouse or pressing keys, this just results in "beeps" and the system no longer responds. It usually reboots after a while. A further "symptom" is that the text in the window with the list of drives "flickers".

If I turn off the e-SATA drive and boot afresh, the system behaves unpredictably. Sometimes the list of drives is displayed in a stable fashion, so that I can select a drive, othertimes exactly the same symptoms occur as when the e-SATA drive is attached and the system seizes up.

Changing various kernel parameters (e.g. acpi=off noapic noapm) does not help.

My system is a a Gigabyte P55-UD6 mainboard with an intel i5-750 processor and 8 GB RAM, a wireless mouse and keyboard connected over a USB port and the whole running under Windows 7 64 Bit ultimate.

I have looked into the possibility of creating a windowsPE bootable system, but this seems to be a horribly complicated procedure.

Can anyone offer any suggestions for a quicker fix.

Hopefully Acronis support will chime in here soon. What you're seeing is the Linux driver support is lacking for your particular hardware. In the meantime I'd recommend you build the WINPE disk. See Gary's tutorial http://forum.acronis.com/forum/9449. It is a bit complicated but the Windows based environment has many more drivers to support drives than does the Linux based bootable media. Since you have the Pluspack you could use Gary's tutorial to build your WINPE disk.

I don't really think this is your problem but it is easy to try if you have another keyboard/mouse. The TI rescue CD Linux sometimes isn't happy with wireless keyboards and mice although the problem doesn't seem to be as bad as it used to be with earlier versions.

If you have a wired keyboard and mouse, try them.

Pete - this is a wild shot ---- I had two similar issues (system freezing) with eSATA units and my problem resulted from a defective drive (case one) and with another similar issue (case 2) the eSATA enclosure was defective. I've got a bunch of SATA drives and enclosures so it was easy for me to test. I have another system I use just for drive testing using Spinrite (see www.spinrite.com) - sometimes a Spintrite test will take several days (I've had some run for a week). The enclosure was a lot easier to test, e.g. I used another enclosure and the problem went away. Although this was a simple test it took me several days to arrive at the idea to swap out the enclosure. Just to confirm it was the enclosure I again used the suspected enclosure and the system froze. You might also give Hard Disk Sentinel a try (see www.hdsentinel.com).

Hello all,

thomasjk and Seekforever, thanks for your help.

Pete, let me shed some light on the issue.

Most likely the issue is in hardware compatibility as thomasjk mentioned. To make sure that lack of driver caused the problem we need some additional information from you. Could you please do the following?

  1. Collect Linux System Report;
  2. Collect AcronisInfo output;
  3. Submit a support request with the gathered information.

As a temporary workaround I may recommend you to follow thomasjk's advice and to create a BartPE/WinPE bootable media.

Please reply to this thread if you need any further assistance.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.
