Recovery from external 2TB and 3TB disks written under Acronis 2011 Home on XP Platform

Thread needs solution

I have written many backups onto external 2 adn 3 TB external USB drives using Acronis 2011 Home on an XP Platform.

I have found that I cannot recover the tib files using the Acronis Recovery Disk or by scheduling recovery from the XP version of the Acronis 2011 Home program.

I was able to recover the files after copying them to a drive under 1 TB, but this is a time consuming hassle.

How do I directly recover the TIB files from the larger disk drives?

Thank you.

David,

Let me state up front that I am not a tech expert.  However I would like to make an "educated guess" and offer a possible solution.

First...kudos to you for finding a workaround. A slow, time consuming solution is better than no solution.

My guess is:

The 2TB and 3TB disk drives are formatted as GPT drives and not formatted as MBR drives.

The Linux kernel that drives the recovery disk is an early version of Linux that does not support GPT drives.

If my guess is correct, then a possible solution is:

Convert the drives from GPT to MBR.

There are downloadable (free trial) programs that claim they can convert drives from GPT to MBR with no data loss.  You can do a search on Download.com.  Personally, I would not trust any program to do a "no data loss conversion".  I would copy the backup files to another drive (backup the backups) and then do the conversion or reformat the drives as MBR and copy the files back to the newly formatted MBR disks.  Yes, this would be time consuming...but safe.  Also, MBR has a 2.2TB size limit.  I believe you can format your 3TB drive as MBR, but it may size down to 2.2TBs.  You will need to do some research on how to handle that.

If the disks are already formatted as MBR, then I'm stumped.

Please let me know if this works out.
