Recovery fails in a system with dual boot (GRUB)
I just did a test, and fortunately it was only a test, to see if Acronis TIH (latest version) could backup and restore a disk that had a pretty standard linux distro on it. My system is Win 7 with the GRUB boot loader, which points to either the Win or Mint OS. Nothing fancy.
I first backed up the entire disk using the full disk backup, complete with MBR and hidden files.
Then, after shutdown, I removed my main drive, for safety, and restarted.
I used the Acronis bootable media and found the backup that was to be restored on the drive where I had put it. I then did a restore to an identical disk (same size).
Everything on the Acronis side seemed to go well. The problem came when I tried to boot from the recovered disk. Of course, the original disk was still disconnected from the system, so there would be no conflict.
The recovered disk would not run GRUB. It tried to and then simply died.
I expect that the partition table pointed to where it expected the boot loader to be but that boot loader was simply not there and the CPU went looking into "empty space".
So, evidently there is a step missing somewhere that I need to know.
Thank You
Tom
