Recovery fails to write data to the disk

Thread needs solution

I need to fully recover my primary C:\ drive on a windows XP desktop machine from a full backup taken with Acronis True Image 2014 a few days ago. I am attempting the recovery with an Acronis 2014 bootable CD.

The primary C:\ drive is 1 Tb RAID 1 array and the backup is on an external SATA connected drive. When I run the recovery, I immediately get the following error :

Failed to write data to the disk
Failed to write to sector '0' of hard drive '1'
Direct R/W operation has failed (0x590001)
Operation not permitted (0xFFF1)

If I select ignore this message, many other identical messages for different sector numbers are returned until I cancel the operation.

Does anyone know why this recovery won't work please? I am wondering if it because my target drive is a RAID 1 array?

Some additional info :
I originally populated the array that I now want to recover from an Acronis 2014 backup in May using the same external drive after I installed two new larger disks into this PC. However I can't remember if I restored the backup to just one disk first and then built the RAID 1 afterwards, or if I built it first.

Thanks
