Recovery problems

Thread needs solution

I am a simple soul who needed to back up family photos and videos. I bought True Image for that purpose only.

I backed up to a 1TB HDD using 'full' to start with, and then incremental. I did not set a schedule because I backed up each time I added data. I almost always did a full backup anyways.

My primary disk for photos was a 500GB external type. It crashed yesterday. When I went to 'Recover' the backup files, the dialogue gave me the option of browsing to the 'backup' folder (a bit confusing as I was trying to recover stuff). When I clicked on the Acronis recovery option I got a message that no previous version existed. I was not looking for a previous version, just the full version that was there and which I could see.

Next, using Windows Explorer I browsed to the folder containing my saved, backed up data and found 2 folders, !backups and My backups. A double click on !backups produced all my backed up files and folders!

Is True Image meant to work this way?

To restore specific data, you have various options:

- You can boot from the ATI bootable Rescue Media and choose a files/folders restore, selecting the files and folders you wish to restore.

- If ATI is installed, you could mount the backup and copy files/folders from it to the drive.

- If ATI is installed, you could double-click the backup to open it in Windows Explorer, then copy files/folders from it to the drive.

- Within ATI, right-click on the backup you wish to restore from and select "Recover Files".

That gives you four methods, so at least one should suit you. :)

And, here's an Acronis note on Restoring Specific Files and Folders from Disk Backup: http://kb.acronis.com/content/34879

Beyond simple data protection, you may also use ATI to make full system backups. We recommend making full disk mode backups. In the event of total disk failure, you could install a replacement drive and recover a full disk mode backup to it, and soon be fully restored to where you were before the disk failure without needing to reinstall Windows or appliations.

Thanks.

One of those methods did not work #4 - I got a message saying that there was no previous version. I agree, it does not make sense.
One did work #2.

The other two I did not need to try ;)
