Reinstall echo after issues with Backup & Recovery "Trial key"

Thread needs solution

I am finding it hard to believe that thsi is the standard corporate support for acronis, but since I have no time to dig further...  Seriously, i expect a phone number for $1000+ corporate level products to at least sort obvious bugs.  We have isntalles around $50k of acronis products in the last few months and I starting to regret it.

I have a SME client running SBS 2003.  I installed initially True Image ECHO for Microsoft Small Business Server and ran into a number of issues, including one that locked up the server and a issue with rotating HDDs (sector 63 read etc etc)

I removed the True Image version via uninstall with control panel and loaded the new backup and recovery version.  That appeared to work, and I set up a 2 x tasks for each HDD (one for data, one for OS with different schedules) to different named folders on each drive.  My theory was the drives for each task would be recorded by ID/vault and tasks related to the alternate drives would fail when they were not plugged in and the 2 x tasks specific to the currently attached drive would work.  I set up retention rules for the OS tasks to remove the backups after a period.

This seems to work initially however I got occasional issues “unknown errors” which prevented the task from running at all.  Seemed related to VSS.  When user interaction was required it seemed not possible to cancel tasks and at one stage the retention rule task indicated it was running and refused to be stopped or be cancelled.  Had to shut processes down manually, not somethign I like to do!  I am not going to bother to detail all those problems.  Suffice to say I don’t have the time to work our yet another set of Acronis problems.

On information from our techs that they think they had a patch for the external HDD sector 63 error, I uninstalled all elements of backup and recovery via control panel, then reinstalled true image echo.  Previous tasks for true image and other setting I noted were retained.  I removed and recreated the tasks.  On running the tasks they now fail with error “True Image ECHO for Microsoft Small Business Server has expired”.  Under “about”, the correct key is showing.

I hunted through the registry and removed the obvious references to Backup and recovery which it seems was not stripped on uninstall.  No good.  I can’t simply reboot this server often to experiment with ways to fix this.

What is the solution?

Hello Adam Oswald,

Thank you for using Acronis Corporate Products

First of all, please note that patch for sector 63 error with backup up to external HDD works for Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server only. But we will be able to get this resolved in your case as soon as we can install product correctly.

I have checked your serial number for Acronis True Image Echo for Small Business Server, it does not have an expiration date. So this issue is caused by some traces from Echo version in your registry. Could you please uninstall the program according to this article?

Thank you.
