Remove Laptop SATA to Clone?

Thread needs solution

I am wondering if it's possible to clone a lop-top SATA drive to a desktop SATA drive by removing the laptop drive and wiring it into a desktop and cloning from there.

Possible?

You can take a laptop drive and wire it in a desktop (most SSD are designed for laptops, for example).
You can clone the laptop drive to another disk using the desktop machine (this will create an exact copy of the laptop disk).

You will not be able to use the clone on the desktop machine, because the hardware controller is different.

You could backup your laptop disk to an external USB disk, then plug the USB disk in your desktop, then restore the image using the universal restore function from the Plus Pack.

Hello Max,

Thank you for finding time to open the thread regarding this question, I will be glad to address it!

If you're planning to boot from the desktop drive, I would suggest you to backup and restore the image of the laptop drive with the help of Acronis True Image Home 2011 and its Acronis Universal Restore.

You see, when you clone the drive, you're cloning all  the data of the source drive, including the boot sector/files and drivers, which are adjusted to the laptop hardware, and thus the cloned drive may fail to boot on the desktop.

If you would like to exchange the hard drives, and use the desktop SATA on laptop, then the cloning should occur with the desktop SATA inserted to the laptop and source drive attached to the machine via USB. You can find the detailed steps in this KB article.
