Removing Old Backup files

Thread needs solution

Despite backup options I have specified "keep only 5 backups". This worked for a while, but now all old backups are being kept. I read in the documentation that you can remove backups but then you have to delete the backup files themselves. Somewhere in the documentation (which sucks) I read how to do this, but cannot find it now. In Backup, only the most recent backup is listed. How do you find the earlier ones?

This seems to be simple-minded, but how does one select a given backup and delete the entry so that you can safely remove the file itself.

This was easy to do in previous versions - even in v. 14.

Even posting a question seems all but confusing. Seems I only should comment on solution(s) offered or success/failure of advice tendered.

Hello, Donald. I have the same problem regarding old backups being retained. In both Version 12 and Version 15, the drive simply filled up, ignoring my instructions. With Version 12, it did work properly for over a year, then filled up the drive, even though I hadn't changed any settings. I do not have an answer, but thought you might like to know that you are not the only one having this issue. Another thing Acronis did (Version 12), was to overwrite several recent backup files when I reinstalled it. This was before I upgraded to Version 15. I had to buy a second external hard drive to start over with backups. When it filled up, I had to switch back to the original drive after deleting all files. Now I'm having to do the same thing.

I also read in the manual for Version 12 that manual deletion of old backup files was allowed. I haven't found that in Version 15.

Thanks for the comments. I've struggled each time a new version of Acronis Backup comes. I do the simple full backiups and deleting old backups has been a problem, even as far back as v.11. I have had no problems with the simple backup and simple restore (every time but one on recovery.) Because I know less than I think I do, I get into situations where a backup has saved my bacon! The manuals have been very poorly written, as far as I'm concerned and it's a struggle to do a simple removal of an old backup. I did find removal in the V15 manual, but literally had to read the whole manual word by word to find it. That was at least 6 mos. ago and I've forgotten how to do it (poor senior memory doesn't help).

The one time recovery did not work for me, prolonged customer support never solved my problem. Fortunately I also run a standard image backup using Win 7 backup weekly in addition to the Acronis backup. That did help me recover. My lesson is never rely on one backup to have the best safety.
