Replacing faulty disk

Thread needs solution

I have an HP Pavilion DV6-2113SA notebook. I m getting reports from System Mechanic saying that 30 odd GB of files are misaligned and I then have to do the repair about 4-5 times a week.

Assuming this is a sign that the disk is in the way out (it is over 4 years old) I'm interested to know how I would transfer all the data from the old disk onto a new disk and I assume I would need to transfer the contents to an external disk then use Acronis to copy it back onto the new disk? I've never done this before so I would be glad to get the lowdown on how to do it!

Thanks.

I think there are many ways to do this...

Have you looked at how to clone a disc as described in the TI2014 full user manual which details the steps ?

A new HDD is a great opportunity to rearrange things as you want. You can also make a full image of your main C partition now (a normal backup) and restore that to a new HDD, and it doesn't have to be the same size HDD either. The only possible problem is that an image like that could be missing vital boot info but its a two minute fix if you have a Windows disc (Vista, 7 or 8 all will work) to reinstate the boot info using the "repair my PC" option.

Whatever you do, I would advise you to make a normal full image of your whole disc now. If you have that you can always recover the partitions even if the recovery isn't a "clone" in the true sense of the word.

(and have you tried running a full chkdisk first from within Windows using windows tools ? If you are using W8/8.1 then you must do that from a command prompt)
