Resolved: mystery of continually failing Disk/Partition backups

Thread needs solution

I have had a call open with Acronis for some weeks, because of an almost total inability to get the Disk/Partition backup option to work. My File level and Email backups were mostly working, at least reliably enough to be usable, but the Disk/Partition backups almost never worked.

The setup is: Dell Vostro V13 notebook running Windows 7, TrueImage 2013 build 6514, backup device Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 Cloud Edition NAS. Running on a home network using my 100Mbps broadband router as a switch.

The errors were many and varied, but the most common seemed to be to do with inability to create the backup file or, once it had been created and written to, sudden loss of ability to write to it.

I went through multiple attempts with the aid of Acronis support staff, who tried changing timeout values, installing updated SnapAPI drivers, deleting and re-creating the backup task, all to no avail. Eventually, and entirely at random, I decided to change the Image Creation Mode (Backup Options, Advanced settings) to "back up sector by sector". All attempts since then have succeeded.

I wonder if anyone has seen this problem and solution before, or has an explanation of why it seems to have worked.

I'm glad this worked for you, but seems an odd solution to this problem. This seems more to be a problem of Acronis losing connectivity to your NAS, and creating a larger (sector-by-sector) backup would seem counter intuitive. ???
