Restore from differential backup does not show file version

When restoring from a differential back, if I click on "view version" I see a version of the backed up file from every time the backup ran, even though the file has not changed - see screenshot of a file last modified in 2005.
How do I find older versions of a file without having to guess which backup might contain the file I want?
