restore questions

Thread needs solution

Windows 7 creates 2 partitions when you install Windows 7. The "rescue partition" and the main partition. What happens if I fail to backup the 100 meg. partition that windows 7 creates? I espically want to know what happens if I create a backup and have to restore that backup?

or what happens to that 100 meg. windows "rescue partition"?
will my machine boot? and work properly?

thanks

David:

The 100 MB partition isn't a "rescue partition". It is the partition that Windows boots from and contains the file bootmgr (Windows Boot Manager) and the folder /boot. Microsoft calls it the System Reserved Partition. The partition needs to be present in order for Windows 7 to boot properly.

If you create a backup you should include both partitions in the backup. You can choose to restore only the main Windows 7 partition if there is nothing wrong with the boot partition. However, it's good to have a backup of both in case you replace your hard disk. If you do replace your hard disk some day then you need to restore both partitions.

When restoring, the 100 MB boot partition should be restored as Active and the main Windows 7 partition should be restored as a Primary partition. True Image should present these choices to you as the defaults when you restore, but it's wise to check to make sure you restore them this way.
