Restore to same disk not possible?

Thread needs solution

I'm kind of confused and hope someone can help me understand...
I have Acronis TrueImage 2014 Professional and wanted to restore my system using a backup I had taken. Nothing surprising about that I guess. So why can't I do it?
I select the backup OK. I chose which items to recover (whole disk) - OK.
But then I am asked to select the destination disk. Well, I want to restore my system so I want to select the system disk - except I can't because it's greyed out.
Am I right in thinking I can only restore to a different disk? If so, what use is that to me when I need to restore my existing system? I'm thinking I must have missed an option or setting somewhere but I've tried the process a few times and can't see what I'm doing wrong. Please help ....!

Hello,
I also use TIH2014 and have no problem restoring a system disk.
I assume your backup is stored on a disk other than the system ?

I boot with the TIH2014 recovery CD ( In my case it is on a DVD)
Select the source from your backup storage drive and then select the destination which in my case was the original "C" drive.

If the backup source is your C drive partition image, you should be able to select that image and then choose the destination drive which should be your original "C" drive. If you have more than 2 drives in your system, use caution and don't accidentally select the wrong drive.

I'm sure other more knowledgeable folks will chime in on this...

Steve

Where is the backup being stored. The program will not restore overtop itself. The backup must exist on something other than the system disk.

I think there could be confusion over discs and partitions here. As long as the backup file is on a different partition to the ones being restored then there is no problem, you simply select the partitions (C drive usually) to be restored.

If you can tell us your disc structure then perhaps we can better advise.

Thanks guys - I'm such an idiot!
I just spent 10 minutes typing out a post that details my disk setup and every step I took so I could let you know exactly what I did
....only to discover my mistake.

In the step that asks "select the items to recover" it looks (to me anyhow) as though my C drive is called "Disk 1" and I select that
so I have in my mind I want to recover my Disc 1, and when I get to the "Select Destination " screen I see Disk 1 is greyed out so can't restore back to it.

But on closer inspection now I see Disk1 is actually the USB backup drive and my actual C drive is disk 2!

Now I understand that when I'm selecting the items to recover I'm looking at the backup of drive C - ie. Disk 1 is the backup image not drive C itself.
Doh!

Anyhow, it's great to know that there are good people here in this forum ready to help.

Pleased to hear you have sorted the problem, things like that can be confusing. Sounds like you are running Acronis from the install media (maybe !) and not from within Windows.

Great to hear you have it sorted though.

Review my sgnature link #3 below and look at item 2 inside that link. The item 2 is a guide to disk image replacment.
