Restore from a VMDK not working

TI Home 2012:
I have a full functional (and licensed) Windows 7 64 bit vmdk running in VirtualBox on an XP Host. With TI2012 running inside the VM I made a full (sector by sector) backup of the VM, and then restored from the tib into a new hard disk, selecting all partitions (including MBR). Tried it with Signature recovery and without, but in every case, I get a MISSING BOOTLDR message when trying to boot from the restored disk.
Is there a 'right' way to create a physical hard disk image from a VM? Thanks.
