Restored "My Documents" files have changed filename

Thread needs solution

I have restored the contents of the "My Documents" folder from an XP TrueImage 2010 backup into the Documents library in my new Windows 7 installation.

Unfortunately all the filenames have been changed and they have unusable extensions because the extensions all have the tilde character (~) followed by 8 alphanumeric characters.

eg letter.doc has become letter.doc~EONB7V5D and sheet.xls has become sheet.xls~ULDVNJ4H.

This makes the documents unusable as they stand. I can fix the problem using a batch filename editor but I am puzzled what is going on here. Is this a feature of Trueimage that I don't understand or has something gone wrong in the restore process?

Interestingly, it hasnt happened in all folders - my itunes collection all have the correct extension.

Have you tried to restore the files to C:\users\peter\my documents? The "peter" may be a different name.

When I try to copy files to the Library area of my Win 7/64, I get some problems. I do not get the ~XXXXXXXX junk but do have strange things happen.

I've actually quit trying to use the libraries.
