Restoring to different partition sizes in TrueImage 2010

Thread needs solution

Hello,
i just tried to recover a complete backup of my hp tc1100 tablet pc (40gb hd) to the original hard disk. Originally the partitions were c: (10gb) and d: (30gb). i want to restore to different partition sizes (20gb c: and 20gb d:).
I found no way, even erasing and deleting the partitions before restoring didn't help.
I can choose a new partition size (e.g. 20gb) when restoring (for example only c: without boot sector), but after beginning the restore, acronis always says "restoring sector-by-sector-backup" though the partitions were plain ntfs and i didn's select any "sector-by-sector"-option when making the backup.
then the original partition sizes are re-created though i selected a different size.
The os is windows xp tablet edition.
how do i restore a backup to different partition sizes? is there any trick when making the backup?
thanks in advance,
johannes

First, I have no experience with a tablet. There have been similar postings on the forum if you wish to perform a search.

Usually, TI reverting to a sector by sector restore indicates it has a problem with the disk. It could be bad sectors, or the location of the starting sector.

My suggestion would be to perform a disk check and fix any errors.
Then perform a defrag on both partitions--maybe even twice to get the files so none are fragmented.

Now, create a new disk option backup with the newly compacted files.

Then, I would manually create the two partitions according to size you want and then restore each partition individually to the new size using the new backup.

I would not restore the track0/mbr unless the restore does not boot.

Hello Johannes and GroverH!

First of all thank you for finding time to report about the issue and many thanks to GroverH for his valuable comment.

Dear Johannes, as it was already mentioned, most probably there are issues with identifying the OS or the file system, thus it starts to recover in the sector-by-sector mode.

I agree with GroverH that you should perform the following steps:

  1. Run the chkdsk /f /r command on the source machine (Start -> Run -> cmd and enter chkdsk /f /r - this command will identify and fix all possible issues with the hard drive and file system)
  2. Create new image of the drive, preferably without the service partition if any
  3. Download the latest version of the Acronis Bootable Rescue Media from your account as shown on the screenshot and burn the ISO image using appropriate writing software such as Nero or Roxio Easy CD Creator which runs on your computer. We recommend you to refer to the following article if you are not familiar with ISO burning.
  4. Recover the image in "partition after partition" mode: when you reach the step where you are to decide "What to recover", please choose first the C: drive. After that you will be provided with an ability to resize it and recover the D: drive.
  5. Proceed with the recovery to see whether the issue persists.

Should the issue be present, we will need to take a closer look at the issue, so could you please kindly provide us with the additional information:

  1. Acronis Report from the source drive
  2. Acronis Info from the source drive
  3. Recovery log
  4. Also could you please kindly specify whether you are recovering onto another machine which may use another motherboard, HDD interface (for instance, from IDE to SATA), RAID controller, etc. or simply to another HDD?

I would appreciate if you could kindly keep us posted regarding this issue so that we could provide you with the further assistance if needed.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Hello Yana,
thanks for your reply. I already downloaded the latest version and created a rescue medium. I can choose a different partition size for c:, only before I start the recovery process after the last question, the message says "sektor by sector recovery" and the original partition size again, and there is no way to disable sector by sector option.
how can i solve this problem?
A short and fast reply would be very nice!
Thanks again in advance,
Johannes

Did you do the chkdsk /r as suggested and if so did it find any errors? True Image is very picky when it comes to hardware. What Windows will happily ignore, will make True Image falter.

Hello,
thanks, yes, I did the chkdsk /r. no change.
Anoone else encountered this particular problem in the past?
