Restoring partition backups to multiboot system
I have a complex Windows and Linux system on three hard drives. I have backed up each partition separately. I missed where it said "validate" (someone mentioned validating the backups on another thread. Assuming I encounter a partition that doesn't boot and I am unable to repair it automatically or manually what precautions do I need to take to restore a backup partition image. In most cases I used sector by sector backups. I can't get my head wrapped around how a restore can work being that new programs may have been installed and/or degragmenation has occurred on the affected partition since the backup. Do I need to format the partition before I do the restore? What about if it's the first partition with the MBR on it? Thanks in advance for any suggesions. BTW, I had problems with three of my six partitions last night and it took me most of the day to get them working again using a combination of chkdsk, system restore, and manual bootrec.exe commands. I probably would have used ATI restore instead if I had a clear idea of what I am doing. I have tried ATI restore before but not always successfully.
