Restoring Windows from corrupted TIB file

Thread needs solution

Although TIH 10 said the backup was successful, I did not validate the backup and I understand my sin here. I'll validate in the future.

I have the Windows Vista 32 installation CD, so I can reinstall the operating system. The problem is that this computer is used by an older person who is set in his ways and I want the computer to run as close as possible to the way it ran before. Here's my plan. Please help me guess if there's a ghost of a chance it might succeed.

My plan is to reinstall the exact version of windows with the exact serial number, etc. and then remove the hard drive from the machine and in another computer start replacing the Windows directory and many other critical folders with the backup windows directory and the corresponding folders that reside on the somewhat corrupted image file. I'm hoping that the corruption of the Image file is in a non-important folder.
Is there a chance this technique could succeed? I can presently browse the corrupted image file and view folders and their contents.

Thx for any comments with reason for comment attached. I usually have ten people tell me it can't be done before I figure out how to fix something that's seriously broken, but if your reasoning is informed and logical, I may actually accept your advice.
