Scheduler - Is it Really Needed?

I do not have Scheduled Backups, but manually start my backups as I feel needed. I have Scheduler disabled, but when I start TI 2015, I get the message to enable Scheduler. Is it really needed, as I did not want it running all the time? What functions does it perform and what happens to my manual backups if I leave it disabled?
