Selected All Partitions - 17GB - but image file is only 10GB - Does 1 and 2 of 4 steps. Says Completed

Thread needs solution

I am trying to image 1 Dell hard drive that has a recovery partition and utility partition. I selected Back up disc. Then I checked the box that selected C drive that held 12 GB, the recovery partition that shows 5 GB and the utility partition that shows 70MB. This brings the total to about 17 GB. I hit next and then select a path on an external USB drive that has 50 GB free space. As the process starts, I see "1 of 4" which takes about 16 minutes , then "2 of 4" which takes 6 minutes. Then the program skips 3 of 4 and 4 of 4. A message says completed successfully. The image file created is only 10 GB and I don't know why.

I repeated this thinking I had left out the recovery and utility partition, but I got the same file size. Does this software compress the image file? Please help. Thanks,

Jeffrey:

Steps 3 and 4 probably complete in a fraction of a second so you don't see them happening. Yes, the program only copies "in-use" sectors to the image file, and the image file is compressed. So you should expect to see an image file that is smaller than the used space on your disk.

Right-click on your image file and choose "Mount". The first screen of the mount wizard should show you the partition layout in graphic form so you can verify that your Dell utility partition was included in the image. Then just cancel the wizard.

Thanks Mark,

Your directions were spot on. Looks like all 3 partitions were done correctly. A million thanks!!! It's great when things work and even greater when well informed and generous people like you step in to lend a hand to those that are struggling.
