Shadowstorage keeps resetting to UNBOUNDED

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis True Image 2015 on a Windows Vista computer. I have been struggling for years now trying to figure out why my hard drive keeps filling up. It didn't take long to figure out that the Shadowstorage size keeps changing to UNBOUNDED, but I haven't been able to trace it to a program. I found a reference in the forum today to the same problem, but it had to be for a different version of ATI. The comments kept referring to backup options I can't find in my version. The disk is 500GB of which I'm using a little over 150 GB and keep setting the Shadowstorage to 100GB. After some time, I get notified that my hard drive is full.

How can I stop ATI from resetting my storage size?

On top of this, I have 62 grayed out Generic Volume Shadow Copies and 2 grayed out Generic Volumes in my Device Manager. Is there a quick way of cleaning these up?

Andrew, as far as I understand, ATI (all versions) just uses the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) as provided by Windows and doesn't make or cause any changes to the VSS settings.

You can download the free Acronis VSS Doctor tool and use this to check your VSS configuration settings and make any corrections where possible.

With ATI 2015 there are no direct configuration options provided to control whether VSS is used or not, but you can force an individual task to change to using the older Acronis snapshot method instead of using VSS by using the following steps.

To disable VSS usage for a particular backup task without touching the Windows VSS service:

  1. Open the folder where your backups settings are saved:
    C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts
  2. Each file there stores settings for particular backup job.
Open files one-by-one in Notepad, or open latest modified file (if you have just modified your task), until you find the one that has backup name on 5th line, e.g. MyBackups
  3. Click Edit - Replace and replace use_vss="true" with use_vss="false"
  4. Save changes and close the file

Please note that the above change is likely to be reversed if you make changes to the task via the ATI 2015 GUI.
