Single File Restore problem - Couldn't Find File

Thread needs solution

I had to restore my copy of Windows 10 from a backup tonight. Although the backup was successful, I later deleted a rather important file (i.e. my outlook.pst file). I had another, older, copy of this backup elsewhere but the other backup was missing a folder and a number of files.

Since I had my Acronis backup image I thought that I would simply restore this file again but when I drilled down into C:\Users\Bill\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook, all I could see was the Accounts folder and the RoamCache folder but the 4 files in the root of the outlook folder were not shown so I could not download the PST file that I needed.

I'm not sure why the outlook.pst file was not shown? Can anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or if this is normal behavior for the restore of a PST file? I would still like to restore this one PST file if possible but I don't know how to proceed.

Also it's been a while since I've used Acronis for anything but backups. It used to be in earlier versions that you could mount the image as a sort of a virtual drive letter and simply drag and drop the file you needed to your PC. Is this functionality not present in the existing version?

Acronis 2015 uses Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS).

Maybe your folder is excluded?

As I understand it, the backup, including the .pst file was successfully restored so it cannot have been excluded. It was part of the restore but subsequently deleted.

The file won't be named outlook.pst of course but I'm sure you know that.

Worst case is that you could try restoring that same image to a spare drive and extracting the file from that?

Yes, I misread the post, Chris is right.

Did you try to open the TIB file from within Windows?

OK, I'm feeling like a newbie here as I have only had to restore my system twice and have only had to restore a particular file once. I'm not sure I follow you when you say that the file will not be named outlook.pst. Can you explain further?

You just gave me the answer I was really looking for.....

The last time I had to restore an old file from a TIB was years ago and you had to specifically mount the TIB as a drive with it's own drive letter just as if you were plugging in a memory stick. I tried double clicking on the TIB and drilled down into the C: drive on the image and there was my 8/8 outlook.pst file. I'll remember how easy this was the next time. Thanks a lot for the great hint.
