slow backup times and more

Why is is ATIH 2014 taking so long for an incremental backup? Yesterday I ran a full backup that took two hours and more but which I can understand for 600 GB over a 1Gbps network. Today I initiated an incremental backup, and from the start some 30 minutes ago the notification says 'remaining time 8 minutes' and the progress bar seems to stick on about 5%. Acronis (10, 11,) 12, 13, 14 have been quite annoyingly displaying the same picture for some years now -and I was either patient or broke off the backup-, so I'm interested to learn what a. the software is doing all that time, and b. what can I do to provide the tool with the means to fulfil this promise.
