Solved issue of Bootable CD not detecting external USB harddisk
Downloading recent TI 2010 build 6053 resolved the issue. Newly created bootable CD can now detect external USB harddisk.

@Allan Tygert
I've found that if the Acronis disk won't let you "see" some of your drives, if I try a different activity - such as go to pretend to start a backup instead of a restore, then back out of it and return to the OTHER activity, sometimes that triggers the visibility of the drives - just a thought.

Thank you very much for this post, it SOLVED my problem trying to back up a laptop to an external hard disk (with True Image Home 2011, bootable CD)!!!
I never had this problem with any of my other PC's, plugging in the hard disk into a USB slot (or switching on if already plugged in) always revealed the external drive as one of the disks to backup to, or restore from. Sometimes this could take quite a bit of time, nevertheless, it would be listed. But starting with my recently obtained laptop this behaviour has changed. Because the external drive was not listed, i assumed some compatibility problem to prevent me from backing up. When returning to the previous menu the external drive immediately began to make some noise, and when selecting 'Backup' once more it was nicely listed as one of the drives...
Regards,
Paul.

Paul,
If your new laptop is Window-8, 2011 will not work properly with Win-8.
