Solving Problem Updating ATIH 2011 to 2012 on Win XP Machines
When I tried to install TIH 2012 on two Win XP SP3 machines neither would complete the install without rolling back. Machine 2 generated error message C:/Program Files/Acronis/TIHome/mapi_32.dll failed to register HRESULT 2147024714
On machine 1: ATIH and Plus Pack 2011 was uninstalled using the Control Panel Add-Remove Programs function. Then all remaining Acronis entries in the Program Files tree were deleted manually in Windows Explorer. The registry was cleaned twice until no errors were found using Registry Mechanic. Next CCleaner was used to clean all temp files and the registry where CCleaner removed the unused .tib file extension. Acronis True Image 2012 then installed normally.
Machine 2 was a bit more difficult. All the above steps were done as listed. ATIH would still roll back with the mapi32.dll failed to register error. After backing up the registry all registry keys to Acronis were manually removed from HKEY_CURRENT_USER_SOFTWARE and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_SOFTWARE using regedit .
Then a comparison was made of mapi32.dll files on Machine 1, a laptop, and Machine 2. Machine 2 was found to have a corrupt mapi32.dll file that had been installed by Mozilla Thunderbird at Windows/System32/mapi32.dll. This file was renamed mapi32_dll.OLD and a copy of the mapi32.dll file from Machine 1 was installed. After a reboot Acronis TIH 2012 installed normally and successfully completed a backup in record time. If the error message is generated, I would check to be sure mapi32.dll is MS version 1.0.2536.0 or later and 110 kb in size as a first step.
It seems that Acronis TI is similar to Symantec products in that all traces need to be removed prior to installing a new version. I hope this helps those with this same problem.
