Source SSD shows as Removable with No Media

Thread needs solution

After cloning a 250GB SSD to a 500GB SSD, my source SSD shows up as Removable and having No Media in Disk Management.  The clone itself worked perfectly, but how can I go about recovering the smaller source SSD to continue using?   I used Acronis True Image 2015 for the clone.

Status/Tried:

- Can't format in Disk Management, and doesn't even show up as a volume.  Only as a removable with no media.

- DISKPART (in cmd) cannot use clean or format on it

- If I go to computer and click on it, it gives message "Please insert disk into Removable Disk (:B)"

Any help will be so appreciated, thank you!

Jeffrey, how are you doing the clone of your source SSD to your target SSD?

The recommended method for cloning is as follows:

  1. Remove the source drive.
  2. Install the new target drive (in place of the source drive, same connector etc)
  3. Connect the source drive using USB or another drive connector
  4. Start system from Acronis bootable Rescue Media using same method as Windows boots, i.e. In UEFI mode if that is how Windows loads, else in Legacy / BIOS mode if Windows boots that way.
  5. Start the Clone Wizard and clone from the source to the target drive.
  6. When the Clone has completed, shutdown the system, remove the source drive and Acronis rescue media.
  7. Restart the system normally and confirm that the cloned drive boots correctly.

See article: 117004: Great Acronis "How-To" videos and other Acronis Resources and KB document: 56634: Acronis True Image 2016: Cloning Disks - the latter is for ATIH 2016 but the principles are the same for 2015.

I already completed the cloning, which seemingly worked perfectly.  When doing it, I had the new SSD attached via USB and the source still in my laptop.  It worked and the new one is in my computer now, though I want to know why my source SSD was made into a removable disk with no media and how to fix it.

Jeffrey, how is your source SSD attached to your computer now?  If it is attached via USB then Windows will always regard it as being a removable drive as that is exactly what any USB drive is.

What is shown in Windows Disk Management for both the internal SSD drive and the attached SSD drive?  Please post a screen shot showing this.
