Specify Location of volume 1??
Hi Folks
i have been using true image home for a few years now but i have installed it on to my new windows 7 pc, i back up to an external hard drive and have various backups set to operate every week, but every time they kick in i get a message saying 'Operation paused- Specify the location of Volume 1', and then every time i have to browse for that volume and click ok, can anyone explain or tell me where i am going wrong!
Thanks Pete

Thanks so much it worked a treat, been trying to sort that out for so long!!

Just in case it makes any difference these are Differential backups NOT incremental.

Hello all,
Thank you for posting, I will be happy to help.
Pete,
It looks like Acronis Scheduler fails to fix the records about the backup files.
Download Acronis Scheduler, which is a special utility to update the scheduler service:
Windows 32/64 bit: scheduler.
Run the batch file, wait for the process to be completed and reboot the computer. See if the issue remains and let us know the results, we should be sure that the program runs flawlessly.
Seekforever,
Thank you for your help.
If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.

Thanks very much for the reply, just one question, do i need to delete the schedules that i have already made and make them again after running the Scheduler??
Thanks again
Pete

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your response.
Yes, you should remove the tasks manually and recreate them after the reboot. Actually, this batch file should remove the traces of the scheduled tasks from the scheduler, that's why it is preferable to delete the tasks first.
Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.
Thank you.

Hi Oleg
i have now done as you suggested, i have made one new task up and set it to run every day, i have also wiped my external hard drive and ran a chkdsk scan on it to make sure there wasnt any problems with it, i will let the backup task run until next week or until i get the error message again.
Thanks Pete
P.s if i do get the error message again would it be worth attaching the log file??, the reason i say this is because when i looked at the log file earlier it seemed to show that the backup task had been completed and it was when it was trying to verify the backup that it was asking for the location of Volume 1.
Pete

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your response.
If you get the error message again, please obtain and attach the AcronisInfo file, this file will provide us with the necessary diagnostic information.
Please keep us informed. Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.
Thank you.

Hi Oleg
Right i have the same problem, i will give you some more details.. when i set the back up & run it for the first time everything seems to run ok, i then set the back up to repeat every half hour, this was fine, but when i turned the pc off and turned it back on the next morning i got the same message about specifying the location of volume 1, but also i have now found out that this message only comes up when the backup is starting to be validated not when its actually performing the backup?
i have tried to use the acronis info program but it doesn't say its compatible with windows 7 64bit and after a while it just says the program has stopped working
so i downloaded the acronis report program and ran that instead it also said it had stopped responding although it did produce a report, i have also attached the log file from when it asks me to specify volume 1 in case this also helps.
I hope you can do something about this as i don't know what else to try.
Thanks
Pete

Hello Pete,
Thank you for the provided information, the nature of the program malfunction becomes clearer. Acronis True Image Home 2010 keeps a database of the created backup archives and their location on the machine. When you start Acronis True Image Home 2010, it refers to this database to display the available backup archives.
The database is stored in the following folder:
\Documents and Settings\All Users/Application Data\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database\archives.xml
It looks like this database becomes somehow corrupted after the reboot.
I propose you the following: Let's wait for the next build release (we expect it soon). If we collect the information based on the current build, we will be unable to include the fix into the nearest build anyway. If the issue is reproduced with the new build, we will obtain the necessary information for a further troubleshooting.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you.
Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.
Thank you.

Thanks Oleg,
Not really what i wanted to hear but i do understand, also just to say that its not when the pc reboots that the problem happens as i think i have rebooted quite a few times on the same night and the backup still ran & validated ok, it seems to be when the date changes, ie when the pc is turned back on the next day.
I think i will have another play about over the weeked and see what other info i can come up with.
i just wondered a couple of things..
1. do you have any idea on timescale for the next build and do we get notified??
2. If i uninstall acronis will that xml database be removed??, im just wondering if its corrupted and i need to delete it and start again.
Thanks

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your reply.
Actually, there can be several reasons of the archives.xml file corruption, it can be caused, for example, by any third-party software activity (Anti-Virus scanning, defragmentation, etc.). The exact reason can be identified by ProcMon utility, but this tool should be activated just before reproducing the issue, otherwise, the resulting file will be very large in size.
The exact time frame of the new build release is unknown, we have had an Update 2 RC build, but support QA returned it for improvement.
Actually, you can remove the archives.xml file manually, after that you can recreate it by using the Browse for backup button at the Data recovery and backup management window. You should browse for location you saved the archives to and select the appropriate archive, and the file will be recreated.
If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

Hi There
just thought i would let you know that my problem still exists, i have made some back up tasks, some on an internal disc and some on an external disc, the internal ones run fine & validate ok, the ones to the external disc run ok until it gets to the validate part, i then comes back with the good old message of specifying the location of volume 1.
With this info i now have i don't think its down to any anti virus or defrag program, otherwise the internal disc back up would be the same and its not, the definitely feels like a problem within TI?
Any further comments or ideas please...

Hi All
Well im still getting the same error message, anyone got any ideas??
I used ti 2009 on this drive before and it was fine, so its either a windows 7 thing or ti 2010 problem.
The only other thing that i thought might be causing a problem is that the External Drive is Fat32 and the internal drive is NTFS, i cant convert the external drive as it ones of theses ones that plugs in to the tv so you can watch videos on it, and it states in the instrction book that if i convert it to NTFS then the drive wont be recognized!!
Please can anyone help??
Thanks Pete

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your responses.
First of all, we should find out whether the archives files become corrupted or the program detects them as corrupted. Therefore, please perform the below actions and let us know the results.
remove the archives.xml file manually, after that you can recreate it by using the Browse for backup button at the Data recovery and backup management window. You should browse for location you saved the archives to and select the appropriate archive, and the file will be recreated.
After that validate the archives and see what happens.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other questions do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

Thanks Oleg
But does this still apply if the archives validate ok??, what i mean is that it only asks for the loaction of the backup when the validation process starts, once i browse and select the first location of the backup it validates fine.
so do you still want me to perform the above steps??
if you do then where do i find the archives xml file??
Thanks
Pete
p.s i also have about 10 backup tasks set, so will doing this affect all them as well???
- Log in to post comments

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your response.
As far as I remember, the issue appears after some time only, the program runs flawlessly for several days (or for several hours). If you are able to reproduce the error message right now, please perform the above steps, this will help to localize the issue.
The file is located at C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database\archives.xml
After removing the archive.xml file you should re-add all archives that corresponds to your tasks.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you. Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.
Thank you.

Thanks again Oleg
just a couple more questions, like i said i have quite a few tasks set up but some have not run yet, the ones that have run do i have to click on every archive for that particulat task, ie if it has run a few times , i will have a full back up and then some differntial ones as well, do all these need to add all these as well??
you then said i should then validate the archive, is that using the seperate vaildate task option??
Also you are right in what you are saying in that it only happens after a while, and also it doesnt happen with all tasks.
if you could include some screenshots that would be good, i just want to make sure i do it right before posting back the results.
Thanks again
Pete

Hi Oleg
Right i have done as you asked and everything went ok, all the archives validated ok and the archives xml file has been recreated,
so what do you want me to do next, or do you just want me to let the task carry on and see if the error message comes back??
Thanks Pete
- Log in to post comments

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your responses.
Now we can be sure that the issue is caused by the archive.xml file corruption. If the error comes back right after the above actions, this means that the archive in itself became corrupted.
So, we should identify the process that influences the integrity of the file.
Could you please do the following?
1) Please cleanup all Acronis log files. The log files are located at C:\ProgramData\Acronis and have the .txt extension. Remove all .txt files available there.
2) Cleanup System and Application logs in Windows Event logs:
Make right-click on My computer -> Manage -> unfold the Event Viewer item -> make right-click on Application -> Clear all events. Clear events for the System item also.
3) Please make a copy of C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database\archives.xml and save it.
4) Obtain AcronisInfo file.
Then please wait for the error to be reproduced. After that please obtain again:
1) AcronisInfo file file;
2) Copy of the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database\archives.xml file.
Have all these files at hand and send me a Private Message, I will create a FTP account to upload the files.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.

Hi Thanks for the reply.
Just a couple of things, i cant use Acronis info, if you read post #12 you will see that i tried using it before and had problems, i should be able to do all the other stuff though. but the settings that you have given me for clearing the windows events logs, are they for windows 7 as this is what i use.
Thanks again for your help.
Pete
As soon as the error comes up again (i have no doubt it will), i will be in touch with you again.

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your response.
To obtain AcronisInfo file please use the link available in this article, we have recently updated this utility, it should work flawlessly on Windows 7. If you are still unable to run it, please let us know the exact build and edition of your operating system. Anyway, please let us know if you are able to run the updated utility successfully.
The easiest way is to clear the event viewer by one-click.
After obtaining the required files I will submit a request to our QA Team. We will try to reproduce the issue to find out the exact reason of the file corruption.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other questions do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

Losing the will to carry on now, just seems one thing after another :-(

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your responses.
Most probably, the issue is caused by the User Account Control feature. Could you please turn it off?
Disable Windows User Account Control (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account On or Off -> Uncheck “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer".
Or
Go Start > Run, issue "msconfig" without quotation-marks and press [Enter]. 2. In Tools select "Disable UAC"
Please note that reboot is required after that, then please try to run the utilities again.
Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.
Thank you.

Good Morning Oleg
Just to let you know that the backup tasks haven't run again yet but i tried your suggestion on disabling the UAC account and running the utilities again, but still no luck( see screen shots)

Hi Oleg & Yana
i thought i would give it a try before i got married and went on honeymoon, so here is what happened, i downloaded the AcronisReport and placed it onto my usb key, i booted the machine from the usb key and AcronisReport started, i then went to use the mouse and found it wouldn't work, its a wireless usb mouse, so i went round to a friends house and borrowed his usb wired mouse, and still it would recognise it!!, "no problem" i thought, i went back round to my friends and borrowed his old PS2 mouse, "this will work" i thought. until i came home and found my motherboard only has one ps2 slot that is taken up by the Keyboard!!!
AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH
will this never end!!
Any suggestions, apart from throwing it out of the window!!

Validation Problems
This is my first post . I don't know whether this issue has been raised in this forum. My apologies if it has been raised and resolved earlier.I have recently upgraded from ATIH 2009 to ATIH 2010. I have followed all the steps mentioned in the user's guide while installing the product. After installing ATIH 2010, I verified that I could boot from the Rescue Media created with ATIH 2010. Thereafter, I created a fresh backup of the C drive on a separate hard disk. I validated the backup using ATIH 2010 without any problem.
I tried to test whether this backup works as expected. If I try to re-validate this backup again after starting ATIH 2010 by pressing F11 before Windows starts, I get an error message that ".. Volume 01 could not be found".
Am I missing something and whether this backup can really be restored ? or should I go back to ATIH 2009?
Regards,
Ravindra Bivalkar

Hello Ravindra,
Thank you very much for posting. I will definitely help you with this.
There can be multiple reasons for corrupt backups. Please check your hard drive for errors and change the backup location to see if this resolves the issue. I would also recommend this extensive troubleshooting guide to see if it resolves the problem.
If you have additional questions, please let me know.
Thank you.

Please add another one to this thread. I am constantly getting the 'Specify location of volume 1' error every time.
My system backs up once a week. I have tried all the other things above. I have a 500gig internal hard drive that I save my backups on.
I have tried the scheduler, removed the archives.xml file manually, and all the other treatments here.
Both the scheduler and archives.xml worked for 1 day, then started all over again. I don't want to manually do this every week.
In the lower right, I do get a "Operation Paused. (time) :Specify location of the volume 1. If you do not make a decision, the current operation will be automatically canceled in 10 minutes"
And here is the weird bit, I can leave the computer for hours in this condition, and it STILL remains in the corner. It's like it is stuck in a loop and won't cancel. It's in the corner at the moment with 11:42:44PM on it, ant the time is 12:07, but it has not disappeared. If I close it, it just keeps popping back up with the current time on. I have to manually stop it using Task Manager. And when I do, it comes up and says in the logs that it is done with errors.
My specs for the computer are:
Athlon 3000+
2 gig ram
XP PRO SP3
1 IDE (300 gig) and 2 SCSI Drives (each 500 gig, one dedicated for backups)
Trend Internet Security Pro.
John.

John,
Does the window go away when you point it at the full backup in the series?
YOu can see this message when ATI has lost track of an earlier file in an incremental/differential chain of backups.
I imagine there is no risk that you drive might change letters when you plug some other device from time to time, but I thought I should mention that might be a reason.
Do you have the error when you start a new backup chain?
- Log in to post comments

I think I have found the problem!!!!!!!
I had the settings to do a full backup followed by an incremental one straight after as the install program defaults to.
I split the operation so it does a full backup on Sundays, and the incremental one on Wednesdays.
I did have 1 error where I had to do chkdsk /f as the MBF was reading wrong.
Since then, it has been running for 3 weeks with no errors or asking for the 'Specify location of the volume 1' error.
Maybe the writers of the program can change the settings like I did in the installation setup. Don't dump everything in one day; break it up and do it over the week.
I'll continue to check it over the next few weeks and will post what happens.
- Log in to post comments

6 weeks now and no problems or errors. It looks like splitting the two functions has done the trick.
John.

Thanks for this. I've had this problem ocassionally & none of the other solutions worked. I hope this one does!!
- Log in to post comments

Well, it's now the 13th of may 2011, 2 and a bit months later, and every save point for Acronis is doing good. There are no problems about 'specify volume error' and it's good to see all green boxes on the log file!
So it seems that splitting the two worked for me! I'd like to hear if it works for anyone else.
John.
- Log in to post comments

Hi John:
I really hope this works for you & don't want to be a bearer of bad tidings. But I've always had my full & incrementals split. I do a full backup to an external drive & then an incremental every other day. I have my options set to automatically verify the backup & it's done at night. I can do this for months with no problem & then all of a sudden, I check in the morning & it quit with the "specify volume error" that occurred during the validation. Attempting to manually verify gives me the loop, but I am able to cancel.
I also know that the backup is probably OK because I can mount it & copy files from it. I deleted the last incremental backup, restored it & still got the same problem. The next day, I tried again & it validated. It's only happened 2 or 3 times in the last 6 months, so it's very weird.
