Split/join an existing backup

Thread needs solution

Hi.

It would be useful an utility in True Image to split/recombine an existing backup.
In the meanwhile I would like to know if using the conversion tools is a lossless operation and then useful for this purpose.
I'm asking this because by converting a .tib file to a .vhd file and re-converting this .vhd file (using the same compression level) to a .tib file the "source" .tib file and the "target" .tib file are not the same size.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Wilfried,

Thank you very much for your suggestion, I've forwarded it to the appropriate department, most likely, we'll implement this feature in the next releases of Acronis True Image software or as a standalone tool.

As for your question: the reason for the size difference is the fact that different compression algorithms are used to convert .tib to .vhd and back.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

I second the motion to provide such a tool to split or combine image files.

I saw another earlier post where someone suggested using a third party tool to split a larger image, but it was followed by several negative comments about TI not being reliable with multi-disk images.

So I would think the best bet would be to have everything done by TI (I have TI Home 2011).

It does seem like it would be a good idea as suggested in the other thread, to move all images to a hard drive before trying to use them to avoid disk swapping.

But it would be nice if you could make multiple disks from your single file backup to have as a reserve without having to make a second backup run.
