SSD SPECIFIC - FAILED TO READ FROM SECTOR - FIX
Yesterday I tried to backup using a partition on my SSD (Sandisk) drive and received a 'Failed to read from sector' error. I tried True Image 2013/2012/2011 with the same result.
I had successfully backed up this partition before.
Selecting 'Ignore Errors' resulted in a backup, but it was obviously not going to restore because it was far too small.
ChkDsk and other disk scanning software reported no problems with the partition. Windows booted OK, and I had not had any problems except the inability to do a backup. I am fairly sure this is a problem applicable to SSD's error reporting and True Image.
This is what I had to do to fix the problem.
Now I have to tell you I could not find a fix that let me backup the partition as it was. Luckilly I do regular backups and the oldest was only 2 weeks ago. This method should fix your SSD as far as True Image is concerned, BUT only use it if you have a previous backup to restore (one created before the 'fail to read' error began.
Providing you can access Windows, copy any data that is applicable since your last backup to another partition so you can manually transfer it back later.
I had created a CD to boot from. True Image 2013 no longer includes Disk Director so I used my True Image 2011 CD.
After loading Disk Director I erased the offending partition, choosing the option to overwrite data once. I let this operation complete, then recreated the Partition. In my case as Primary, NTFS.
I then re-booted into True Image, and restored the previous 'good' backup. I booted to Windows, moved over the data I had saved, did a few updates that I remembered I needed since my last backup, and once again tried a backup.
This time the True Image backup worked without any problems. Deleting and overwriting the partition had removed any errors on the SSD.
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU HAVE A PREVIOUS BACKUP THAT WAS CREATED BEFORE THE 'FAILED TO READ FROM SECTOR' STARTED TO APPEAR.
