Starting fresh need some guidance

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I was using Acronis 2012 for the last few years and at some point I started getting some file not found messages so I decided to upgrade to 2015 and start fresh.

I currently have a few backup chains on my backup usb drive that I do not want to delete since they are my only backup. But I want to start a fresh backup. I have some problems with missing files in the current backup so I can't really use it anymore but I don't want to delete any of those files because I can use them to get at my backed up data.

Can I just create a new backup and remove my previous backup form the list but leave the backup files from previous backup on the usb drive?

I noticed there is an option for removing the backup from the list but keeping the files so that is what I was planning to do. Then I was going to create a new backup that will write to the same backup drive but under a new name. Then eventually when I have a few backup chains in the new backup I will delete those old backup files.

Does this seem like a good approach? If not how should I go about setting up a new backup?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Steve,

What you descibe above is perfectly ok--except
instead of " Then eventually when I have a few backup chains in the new backup I will delete those old backup files."
use one of my backup scheme examples instead. These examples use "automatic cleanup" which will have the program do the tib deletion based on your retention setting of your backup scheme, so no manual deletion by the user is involved.

Do start a new storage folder for each of your new tasks created for 2015 so there is no involvement with other tib backups.

I don't know your type of backups whether you use full only; or full with x incrementals; or full with x differentials; so an example of all 3 is included.
In advance, figure out how many chains of backups you wish to keep and use that figure for the "keep x number of chains"

Keep full only:
GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme.Keep 4 versions (chains). The 4 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs..

Keep full plus X Incrementals:
GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. 6 Inc, Keep 4 chains. The 6-4 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs.
Note/example: If rule selected is "Delete older than 7 days" is selected, deletion will not begin until the first chain (7 files) is completed and entire chain is older than 7 days.

Keep full plus X Differentials:
GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme. 2 Diff, Keep 2 chains. The 2-2 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs.
