Still no luck recovering my laptop with ATI 10.0
RE:
Acronis TI Home 10.0 build 4942 (circa 6-23-07)… HP dv6375 computer, 32 bit Vista Home Premium, Intel chip, etc etc
I am having no luck in recovering my computer from a full backup via a USB remote HDD. The backup was made 2 days prior to my troubles. My “troubles” stem from a couple of “dumb” moves I made while trying to clean up my desktop. I am sure I have messed up a couple of very important Vista files. This backup verified as good at its initial completion and prior to the recovery attempts I have tried.
PROBLEM: Acronis Recovery locks up within the 1st hour of what appears to be a 5 to 7 hour process. During this lockup, neither the Computer HDD nor the Remote HDD appear to be doing anything as no indicators (via the HDD activity indicator lights) show any activity. On my last try I let the recovery run over 26 hrs to no avail.
I had a previous thread on this Forum (http://forum.acronis.com/forum/8730 ) where GroverH & DwnNDrty had suggested some things to try… Thanks to them. I’ve tried them all but nothing has fully worked as the recovery has continued to lock up as explained above. I have booted (attempted to boot) ATI 10. from several boot CDs including the “latest?” ISO file from Acronis customer service (ISO recovery CD build 6053).
The only boot CDs that seem to allow ATI 10 to start running are older ones that I had made at various previous backups. The 6053 build will not start Acronis 10 although I have to admit I’m not sure I burned it correctly.
One of these older CDs will bring up ATI 10 with 3 choices… Open in Full mode, open in Safe mode or open Windows. Another CD only gives two mode choices…Full & Windows. Of course clicking Windows doesn’t work on any, not that it is needed.
I’ve read a ton of stuff on here but end up further confused and way more frustrated. And, if I can be critical, I can’t believe or had no idea how labor intensive all this seems to be. And if I can repeat, most of the discussions on this True Image Home forum are way over my head and I have to wonder why it takes so much effort to get these products to work. Again, this is extremely frustrating for novices such as me. I’m not criticizing the members for posting these high level discussions… I am criticizing the product for requiring this level of talk to get it to run.
So moving on, what’s next??
1) If I reload Vista, would I be able to get my files and folders via some part of ATI 10 from the original drive?
2) Would I have more of a chance if I also started with a new (virgin) HDD?
3) Even though it may not be preferred, should I try to clone to a new drive?
4) If I attempt to clone, does that ruin all chances of using the ATI 10 backup for a different attempt at something else?
Thanks for listening
Thomas

Thanks for the quick reply. You are helping to save my sanity.
1) The USB remote is hooked directly to the computer and does not go through a hub. I tried to follow the recommendation of using the rear usb ports except the computer only has side ports... one on the right, two on the left. I assume these connection positions are to use the ports that are in direct line to the MB. I went with the single port on the right side. I used the right hand one thinking that might be the best as most people might choose it for being right handed.
2) Interesting. ISO file 6053 was given to me by Acronis (Sanjiv Singh Jauhari). I very specifically stated to Acronis that I was using ATI 10 build 4942 (circa 6/2007). I'm not sure why they don't just identify and link all the various Rescue Disc ISO files to the web site. I doubt people would misuse them.
BTW, does anyone know what the highest effective ISO FILE version would be for ATI 10 build 4942?
What happens if I just re-format the existing computer drive? Also, how do I know that the backup (on the remote HDD) is good, bad or otherwise. I have verified it several times (right after it was completed and during attempted recoveries) but what I'm reading on here and Wilder's says that may not matter.
Regards,
Bob
EDIT:
I have ATI 11 also. In my readings I am lead to believe it may be backward compatible to the closes previous version ie. ATI 10.4942. If so, what if I try all this through ATI 11? Would there be a chance it might work or am I smoking something special?
Thanks

Bob,
I would definately give TI 11 a try. It work may work fine for you.
When you look at the 6,053 CD, what do you see on it? If you see the ISO file, then it didn't get burned correctly.
As for the image file, you would need to boot to TI (whichever version/build you use) and Validate it. Make sure it can be read successfully.
Build 4,942 was the last released build of TI 10. There may have been some later custom builds released by support on an as-needed basis, but those aren't available now.

I may have mis-spoke. TI 11 is not installed on the defunct computer and since I can't boot it passed the 1st BIOS screen, I have no way to get it on the machine.

Please explain. What should I see?

I have verified the image file both right after the backup was made and during attempted recoveries. It always indicates as good.

I thought you had a TI 11 CD.
When you look at the TI 2010 (6,053) ISO CD using Explorer, you should see nothing (no files/folders) or you should see a Recovery Manager folder. If you don't see any files or folders on the CD, the properties should show somewhere between 30 to 60MB of used space.

If as a final resort you decide to re-install Vista and then either TI 10 or 11 you would be able to either mount or explore your images - then you'd be able to access your data, but not programs as these won't run unless you've re-installed them.
If you have registered either your v10 or 11 then you'd also be able to download the Safe Media Plugin, which once installed would allow you to burn a new rescue CD with the DOS based access rather than Linux, you will need toahave installed a version of TI somehwere in order to do this.
This CD might allow you to restore your complete image.
