There are some threads in this column I would like to follow and would like to know if there is a way to subscribe to the thread to get notices of new replies without having to contribute to it?

You surely can do it. At the bottom of the page near "Save" button you have an option "Notify me when new comments are posted". Just tick that option - and you'll start receiving e-mail notifications.

In order to unsubscribe from the thread just follow the link at the bottom of e-mail notification.
