Suggestions for Backup Plan

Thread needs solution

I've read SuperDoug3's backup plan, but it is a bit complicated to wade through. I'd like some suggestions on how people typically setup their backups..... Your entire disk once a week (full plus incrementals on subsequent weeks) Email daily and maybe My documents daily.... I realize this depends on what kind of data you have and how often things change, but I'd like to get a general idea of what schemes others use. Am using ATI 2010.

Thanks,

Phil

One place to start would be item #12 inside my signature link index below.

Grover,

Thanks. I did previously review your article and the links in item 12. I think I am looking for opinions on how often a backup is enough and since email would accumulate from day to day, I am suspecting a weekly full/incremental should be enough with daily email backup.

I get my mail delivered direct to my desktop but if I choose to log into my ISP or mail provider, the ISP has duplicate copies of my receipts for the last several days.

The only backup that I perform is a disk option backup. This includes copies of all my multiple partitions on my system drive. I choose NOT to use TIH to perform separate backups of my personal files nor email. These are auto included in the disk option backup.

Currently, I make 3 backups. Each one is a full backup weekly with 6 daily incrementals. The beginning dates of the full backup are scattered so I am usually only 1 day away from a full backup. I keep several months of backup archives. Disk space has gotten cheaper making for easier bulk storage.

Backup 1 (Sunday) is to an internal disk. Backup 2 (Tuesday) is to an external disk. Backup 3 (Friday) is to a different external disk. .

I use Chain2Gen on all 3 backups plus I additionally use DriveNotify on the tasks where the backups require advance notification to attach to correct external drive.

My backups just happen effortlessly with little to no attention.

I also do a lot of testing for the forum so something different is happening on my computer all the time with an assortment of special backups and settings. I also have my system disk in a quick remove caddie so I can remove my main disk in seconds and insert a new one just as fast. I probably restore my full disk about once a month.

Grover, thanks. I take it you need Chain2Gen in order to tell Acronis to make a new full backup weekly. I will have to take a look at Chain2Gen.
Off this Topic, I just installed Acronis today downloading the latest version and immediately had my Windows 7 freeze during the full backup. I contacted support and they had me download and install a newer version of SnapAPI which helps somewhat. I also have a couple copies of Norton Ghost 15 that I was debating to install instead of Acronis. I previously used Norton Save and Restore a ghost variant and never had it freeze my system!
We will see how Acronis performs over time.

. I take it you need Chain2Gen(C2G) in order to tell Acronis to make a new full backup weekly.

No, the weekly backup creation can be handled by TI. The actual schedule and the creation of backups are still handled by TI even when using C2G. The only issue is whether you are satisfied with the numbering system when multiple full backup files (and multiple incremental) are all contained in the same folder; or whether you want to use consolidation.

I chose Chain2Gen because it keeps the backup sets in separate folders and it offers several user choices to fit different situations. Its results are predictable. If you want to know more about C2G, check item 3-B inside my signature index below. I use a different task for each storage drive.
