Switching from Non-Raid to RAID 0 - possible ?

Thread needs solution

Hello,
I am planing to change my hardware configuration on my workstation (windows 7 prof 64 bit). Currently the system is running with one HD (SATA) but I am planning to use the hardware RAID capability of my motherboard by installing a second HD and running both HD's as RAID 0.

Therefore I plan to make an actual image with TI Home 2010 (6.053) on my NAS and after installing my hardware do a recovery from my NAS.

My question is: Will this work ?

Thanks
Hans-Peter

Yes it works. Once you create the Raid volume it looks lile a single drive as you had before to your backup software so you will still be restoring to the same "C drive."

Yes, it looks like a single drive (1 partition). But, how do you restore the 'system' partition that Win7 requires (100mb)?

If you have your hard drive controller set to AHCI, you can move to RAID 0 with certain controllers and Windows can sort it out. For the most common case, there is a strong chance you will get a BSOD, as RAID drivers needs to be installed at Windows installation time.
Moving to RAID 1 is less of an issue.

Some users had some luck preparing their system ahead of switching the BIOS settings ( http://forum.acronis.com/forum/13329 )

You don't risk anything trying anyway. Worst case, you will end up having to reinstall Windows as you would wihtout an Image.

You can also try the Universal Restore, also you will need to provide ATI with the right drivers and it might not be that easy to do.

Wrt to your question, you would just try to restore your partitions as they are in your image. If you have the system reserved in the image, itwill be restored on the RAID.

I have an MSI Gaming laptop that has two 256 GB SSD Drives and one 1TB drive and I went from a Non-Raid to Raid 0.  It seemed to work because when I look at it thru Acronis it shows 476GB but one of the drive is unallocated so when I boot up in Windows 7 I only have 256GB and not the 476GB.  What can I do to resolve this issue????

Hello Mark,

Are you saying that after rebooting the computer half of the RAID 0`s space went away? Was it 476 GB before rebooting both in Acronis and in Windows Explorer? You can uninstall Acronis, then repair or recreate the RAID, reboot and see if the size of the RAID remain the same or the problem re-occurred. This would show whether the problem is specific to Acronis or not.
