System Backup

Thread needs solution

I have TI 2012. I usually make an image backup of my entire computer. In older versions I knew how to make a backup only of system files, rather than any data. I don't know how to do this in 2012. What I am trying to do is place the operating system and related files on a SSD and leave all the data files on my existing hard drive.

Elliot,
For now, MS still co-mingles it's OS with user data. If I understand you, the configuration you are describing is usually easier to set up from the start. OS on one disk, user data on a second drive. Some programs don't allow you to specify a "working directory" which serves as a repository for the data a program uses.

The best and safest way to move in this direction would be to create a full disk image back up and restore this to your SSD. Once you are sure the new drive is functioning, you can begin using your 'old' disk for data storage or set up working folders or directories to be used by programs supporting this feature on the new SSD.

Once you have this working, you can make images of both disks so that your OS and data are protected.

Thanks, shadowsports. You understood my question perfectly. I'll image the entire hard drive to the SSD and then delete data files after the transfer. Thank you!
