System recovery failed - driver not loaded when booting (ATI 8, XP prof)
Windows XP prof. german
ATI 8.0 german
Hello,
unfortunately I can't recover my system from an ATI image.
The problem might be that I had to write the image to a DIFFERENT HDD
(80 GB Samsung) than the orginal one (40 GB Western Digital).
The new HD was newly formatted and checked for errors.
The ATI image was checked before the restore process
and afterwards the results checked as well.
No errors were indicated.
From the restored image the booting initiates but at a certain
step failes and ends in an endless boot loop.
The last driver loaded ist mup.sys, then the first non loaded
is "Microsoft Tun-Miniportadapter".
And now? Any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance!
Dieter

Scott Hieber wrote:ATI8 is a very old version; have you successfully restored with it in the past on th is machine? When restoring a disk image, there is no need to format the new disk.
Disk you backup the entire disk, all partitons, etc and not just files?
Did you restore all partitions?
- In the past there was no need for a complete restore. Have only recovered some files from older images.
- Entire backup, all (there was only one) partition.

If you want solid restore of a system, it's best to restore the whole partition and not just selected files.
File restores are fine for data files but for program and the OS, use a partition or disk restore. It's too hard, otherwise to be sure that you get all the right files, and registry hives, hidden files, etc.

You misunderstand me. In the PAST, I restored some single files from the image.
I never tried whether a full system setup will work with ATI.
Now, to restore the system I used the complete image of the entire system.

Ah, I think I understand.
For a system backup, you need to backup the entire parititon (My Computer), not jsut do a file backup (My Data). Is that how the backup was made?
A My Data backup won't capture enough to provide you with a bootable system image.
I am assuming you are restoring tothe same computer, jsut with a diff hdisk in the same location as the original hdisk, correct?

I HAVE USED ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE FOR MANY YEARS WITH NO PROBLEMS ON THE LAST 3 COMPUTERS THAT I HAD OWNED. LAST YEAR, I PURCHASED A DELL XPS 8300 PC. THIS IS THE FIRST COMPUTER THAT I OWN THAT I HAVE NOT BUILT MYSELF. I HAVE TRUE IMAGE 2011 HOME AND IT SUCCESSFULLY BACKUPS UP MY ENTIRE HARD DRIVE, BUT IN THE PAST 7 MONTHS, I HAVE HAD PC PROBLEMS WHERE IT WAS NECESSARY TO RE-INSTALL THE OPERATING SYSTEM AND ALL MY PROGRAMS MANUALLY WHICH TAKES MORE THAN A DAY TO DO BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH I CAN USE MY ACRONIS BACKUP FILE TO RESTORE EVERYTHING, IT WILL NOT WORK ON MY DELL PC. DELL HAS INCLUDED A UTILITY THAT BACKS UP DATA, BUT IT ONLY BACKS UP MY PC TO THE STATE IN WHICH IT WAS WHEN I TOOK IT OUT OF THE BOX. ALL OF MY DATA FILES ARE LOST.
I WOULD HAVE TO PAY AN ADDITONAL FEE TO UPGRADE THEIR UTILIY TO INCLUDE BACKING UP MY DATA FILES IN ADDITION TO MY OS. IS THERE ANY WAY FOR TRUE IMAGE TO WORK ON MY PC? OR IS TRUE IMAGE INCAPATIBLE?

This is not a common problem that I recall. It appears that the backu is valid or ati would not restore it. It appears to restore since it does not report any failure during restore. Windows appears to try to boot but fails while trying to load a driver file
Try searching on the older forums in use when ati8 was in release
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65
and see if yo can track down anything.
Because it sounds more like a windows than an ati problem, this might be helpful:

Also, check that the deivce for the adaptor where win hangs (possbily a network issue -- maybe, say, a network card is not repsonding to setup during boot causing a hang.

You shouldn't hijack a thread; you should start your own.
But first search the forums. Dell has some unique issues. The dell utility just reimages the drive to original condition; prety much useless if you've used the pc for any length of time because it doesn't have any progrs you've added or your data -- yeeuck!
IF you don't find anything helpful inthe forum and decide to start a thread, include a description of the problem you're having. Simply saying that it doesn't work is like trying to have the auto mechanic fix your car over the phone by say to her or him, " It doesn't work."
But what yo probalby want to do is follow the procedure in the userguide for or in Grover's guides -- they inlcude info on manipulating partiton size and placement, which can be crducial with OEM hidden partitions such as Dell uses.
