Test of TI 2010 to see if it can recover a system backup failed
Here's what I did. Backed up my HP Pavilion Notebook's entire system (Windows Vista 64) to an Acronis Secure Zone on the computer. Then, following the recommendation in the documentation that I test it, I used the bootable rescue CD I created to restore the backup to an external hard disk, recovering both the system backup and master boot record (MBR). So far so good. Then I changed the BIOS boot order to boot from the external disk. But when I tried to boot up Vista from this disk I got an error page that lasted only a second before the computer shut down. After trying again several times, same thing happened, but I managed to piece togeher part of what the error message said: something about it couldn't detect a missing device, etc. and had to shut down to prevent damage to my computer. I thought I had done everything correctly. This is not very reassuring should a real disaster occur. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not quite sure what you meant by "replace the notebook drive with the one in the external enclosure." Does this mean I have to remove the notebook drive altogether and attach a non-usb drive in order to load the restored Vista program, etc.? That would mean having to purchase a new drive just to test Acronis, not very practical. But maybe that's not what you meant.

Gerald:
The best way is to create an image to an external drive. I believe you did this.
Now create a rescue boot CD (I think you already have done this).
Shut computer down.
Remove the internal boot drive (the one you now boot from).
Install in your computer a new (or any other) drive that doesn't need to be formatted or partitioned. This drive is in the same place your original drive had been.
Boot from the rescue CD, do a restore of the image that is on your external drive. Make sure it is marked to become "active". Remove CD. Re-boot and you will have an exact copy of your original boot drive.
I keep several full images on my external drive so I could restore whichever one that I would want.
Browse to Newegg for some good drive prices. Watch for their special offers which seem to happen often.

Hello all,
Let me comment this situation.
Fungus and DwnNDrty, are right - there's no way to boot your Windows from an external drive after recovery with our product. Actually, this can be done by using some special procedure (I mean that Windows can be booted from external HDD), but in our case we should make your laptop bootable from internal drive.
So please follow the suggestion -
Boot from the rescue CD, do a restore of the image that is on your external drive. Make sure it is marked to become "active". Remove CD. Re-boot and you will have an exact copy of your original boot drive.
If you're having trouble with the process, please feel free to ask me or other forum members, we would be glad to help you.
Best regards,
