Think HDD is dead

Thread needs solution

I'm booting from a CD with Acronis True Image ver 11.  My backup *.tib file is on an external usb drive.  Everything works until I try to write the tib file to my HDD in the computer.  I don't see the drive access light flashing much or if at all.  How can I tell if the HDD is actually bad?

Thanks,

Fred

Fred, when you are booted from the ATI 11.0 Rescue CD - can you explore any of the contents of the HDD if you click on the Backup option and then pick Files & Folders and try navigating to a variety of different folders for the source data?  This would give you a quick feel for whether the drive is usable or not.

The other method that I use is to boot from another boot CD such as Hiren's Boot CD which will boot into a mini-XP environment, or a Linux Live boot CD - see webpage https://livecdlist.com/ for a comprehensive list.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response and ideas.  The only thing I think I see is my backup drive.  When I select backup I see Disk 1 Elements (C:)

When I get to view the contents of Elements (C:)  It shows all 3 computer *tib files but no computer drive.  Last time I backed up I had at least C and D and I think E.  I remember seeing Elements (D:) which was my external backup drive with the Acronis tib files from earlier backups.  I'm guessing because it doesn't see the drive in the computer it moved the Elements name from D to C.  A friend recommended I replace the drive with a Samsung EVO 850 SS drive rather than another mechanical drive and that is what I'm going to do.

Thanks,

Fred
