TI 11 Home issue with WIndows 7 64 bit Diskcheck failure

Thread needs solution

I am running Acronis® True Image Home® version 11.0 (build 8,053) on 2 computers, both running Windows 7, Win 7 Ulimate 32 bit, and Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Acronis backup/restore does work with both OSs but TI 11 Home DOES interfere with DISKCHECK in the 64 bit version. (Running TI 11 on the 32 bit WIn 7 OS doesn't have this issue).

I began getting this error message if I tried to run Diskcheck and after a few weeks began getting it on every start up.

Autochk cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed sotware package.
Use the system restore feature from the control panel to restore to a point prior to the recent software package installation.
An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 3f1).

This is not a fun error message and most online fixes that are not simplistic (Using control panel to go to an earlier Win restore point actually fixes the bug or you can run DISKCHK from Windows Safe Mode) usually point out an issue with 3rd party sorftware. It's a broad list - everything from Windows updates to anti-virus software is listed somewhere as the causative issue. I tried ALL the fixes but none of the suggestions worked for me. I then decided to use Acronis TI 11 to restore to the initial images I made when I first built the system. Acronis backup/restore worked fine but restoring the earlier images (that both included Acronis TI 11 Home) did not resoleve the Diskcheck bug. I had no other recourse but to rebuild and as I installed/updated every software package, I ran Diskcheck to verify that the specific package was not the causative issue for my diskcheck failure.

DIskcheck failed to run after I installed Acronis TI 11 Home (error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1 as shown above) but ran fine as sonn as I uninstalled Acronis. That makes it conclusive as the cause of this error. It only is an issue with the 64 bit version of Win 7. My 32 bit version runs fine and, to date, doesn't affect the diskcheck operation.

I know this is not the only issue/post about WIN 7 and TI 11. I've seen one posting in this forum that says to insure compatibility, you need to upgrade to 2010. I find the viewpoint offensive. It is one thing to say customers shouldn't expect a free upgrade every time a new OS is released. Fair enough - one shouldn't expect an free update to an Acronis designed for Windows 2000. It is another to force established customers to buy new software 6 months after they purchased TI 11. TI 11 was never flagged as an issue with upgrading to 7 in Upgrade Advisor.

Even though the Upgrade Advisor didn't flag TI 11, it still may have problems. One of those problems is that TI 11 was created quite a while before Windows 7 was released and does not support it. TI 2010 is the first Home version to support Windows 7 and is (as far as I know) the only Home version that will get support from Acronis on Windows 7. These are the main reasons for the recommendations to upgrade.

That being said, there are several things you can try: 1. Update to the most current build of TI 11 (8,101). 2. If available, update the snapapi drivers (Acronis Support should be able to give you a link for this). 3. Explain your problem to Acronis Support. Due to the fact that your purchase wasn't that long ago, they may be able to swap the TI 11 license for a TI 2010 license so you can run a compatible version.

OK. I broke down and upgraded to Acronis TI Home 2010 (build 7,046), I just installed it and imaged everything. As a final check I ran Diskcheck on Drive C. It failed, just as before. The only software that was installed after the last sucessful diskcheck was Acronis 2010. I ran dozens of successful diskchecks following every software bundle I installed up until the installation of ACRONIS. Upgrading to 2010 from TI 11 made no difference.

I will uninstall Acronis and if Diskcheck then runs, I will return the product with the 30 day guaranteed refund. This is a third party software bundle, admittedly ciitical to safe and secure operation, but still it has cost me days of work. It is not worth either the cost in money or certainly not the investment in time. I will gladly buy any product from any competitor at any price. At this point, 2010 is not compatible with Windows 7 64 bit since it interferes with a critical function - diskcheck. I can buy other backup software. I cannot use an OS that does not have a functional diskcheck utility.

Unfortunate, since I've used ACRONIS for about 10 years.
