TI2011 Cleanup deletes backups from DB, but not from disk

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have the Cleanup options set, on my backup, to "Store no more than 3 recent version chains". This does not appear to working correctly, as the files on disk are not being deleted.

If I use "Mount Image", then that shows, correctly, that there are only 3 chains available to mount. However, on the disk, there are currently 8 chains, and a new one is added every week.

Is there something else I have to set, to ensure that the files are cleaned up, along with the internal DB.

Cheers,
Eddie

No, your settings should be working.

You have an issue with the task/DB. This can happen if you have edited your backup settings "too much" (whatever that means for ATI).

Since you don't see the versions any longer in ATI, you can delete the older backups manually.

If the problem stays, recreate a new task with a new name to another directory, and/or delete your backup and recreate a new backup task.

Are you using the ASZ?

The only changes I made, after setting up the backup, was to "fix" the Cleanup parameters, as I got caught by the issue that doesn't save the settings, if you try saving while still on that page.

I have another system, that has not had any changes made, since the backup was defined, getting close to CleanUp time. I'll see what happens with that one.

No, no ASZ.

Cheers,
Eddie

Yeah... 2011 is fragile when you change "big" settings (like autocleanup).
If I were you, I would delete the backup that doesn't work from ATI (operations > other > Delete, I believe). This will delete all your settings and TIB files. If you want to keep some TIB, move it to a temporary directory before deleting. ATI will complain it didn't delete all the filem but persist. Then recreate a new task.

Not really the words you want to hear about a Backup solution. That should always be rock solid, as it's your last line of defense.

I'll try rebuilding a new backup task sometime over the weekend, and let you know how it goes.

Cheers.

OK, the second machine on my network hit the point where it should have started to delete the oldest backups. Guess what, it didn't. The same issue as on my primary machine.

On this second machine, I created the backup task once, and have not had to modify it.

Could it be that I am backing up to a UNC share be part of the issue.

Cheers.

Can you post a screenshot of your backup settings, and of the directory where you have the backup files?

On the seconde machine, are you positive the auto-cleanup options have sticked? You need to be on the backup scheme tab when you press OK to close the backup options window, or the autocleaning options doesn't stick.

The "store no more than x"... option has proven to be the most robust option for auto-cleaning.

I backup my VMs through the network and I don't have issues.
